Bottle of 50 cl from a shop in Nurnberg, thanks Sabine! Initially thick, dense and frothy, lightly lacing, beaten egg-like head, thinning and eventually breaking, on top of a warm ’old gold’ coloured beer with light peachy hue and quiet effervescence, equally misty as expected from the style. Aroma suffers from that horrible lightstruck effect (skunk) but luckily this fades after a while, allowing more pleasant, subtle impressions to appear: white bread, chamomille, minerals, straw and even some grass, dried apricot, strong sourdough, pure sourish yeast even, unripe gooseberry, hint of green apple, cardboard, chalk. Soft, neutral onset, basic soft sourishness with minerals which keep accompanying the rest of the palate, as if they are piercing through from the brewing water ’underneath’ a pleasant, quite fluffy, rounded malt sweetness, becoming ever more bready in combination with the yeast; finishes very bready, sweetish and almost undisturbed by hops, though a subdued, almost ’hidden’, leafy hop bitterishness provides structure at the back and releases some ’noble’ floral impressions retronasally. The bready sweetishness lingers for a while. Uncomplicated unfiltered lager yet somewhat more delicate than it seems at first glance, as any decent Kellerbier, balancing its basic components (which are, as usual in traditional German lagers, low in number) quite well, though admittedly it lacks some refinement compared with the best beers in this particular style. Very quenching and pleasantly drinkable Kellerbier, too bad for the (initial) lightstruck effect in the nose though - as with most session beers, I assume this will be a whole lot better fresh from tap in its home region.
