JavaHead is like a day at Tröegs; it’s hard to tell where the coffee ends and the beer begins. This creamy oatmeal stout is infused with locally roasted, cold steeped coffee through our HopBack vessel releasing subtle hints of cocoa, roasted nuts and dark mocha.

From 355 ml bottle courtesy of Maria and Vasilis. Thanks guys! Dark brown almost black color with beige brown head. Roasted malty aroma, milk chocolate, cocoa, light coffee, some fruity notes. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma with dark chocolate addition. Medium to full oily silky body with soft carbonation.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Julio’s Liquors. Aroma is roasted malts with relatively subtle chocolate, dark fruit, oats. Maybe the faintest hint of coffee, but honestly not getting it. Appearance is dark, dark brown. Reddish-brown seen at the bottom with light source behind it. One stream of sparkle noted at the edge of the glass. Finger-width foamy light brown head with fair retention and nice lacing. Taste is moderately rich roasted malt with dark fruit and late espresso/coffee bitter taste. Palate is medium bodied with thick, creamy texture, average carbonation with dry, bitter finish as above. Overall, this is good but doesn’t stand out in any way. Aroma and taste are pretty restrained and, given that it’s got Java in the name, you’d think there’d be strong coffee flavor but there wasn’t. OK. Nothing I’d turn down but better offerings out there.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, best before 4/9/2016. Pours nearly opqu dark brown/black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky dark tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Awesome appearance. Aromas of dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toasted oats, dark bread, herbal, pine, light pepper, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toasted oats, dark bread, herbal, pine, light pepper, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Medium piney/spicy and roast/charred bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toasted oats, dark bread, herbal, pine, and roast/charred earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitter/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good oatmeal coffee stout style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to sip on for the abv. This was more of an American stout style on the level of hoppiness; but it was not a bad thing, and it was still nicely balanced. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Jet black in colour, with a small, beige, head. New world hop and coffee bean aroma. yeasty, coffee and roasted malt flavours, with the coffee lingering for a very long time afterwards. A bit thin bodied for a stout, but pretty good overall.

Pours a dark brown from a bottle. Good coffee/caramel/chocolate notes in the nose, flavor is a nice mocha, almost milkshakey moutfeel. Good beer.
