It’s now “en vogue“ again – the popular Maxlrain SCHLOSS TRUNK. Well into the late nineteenth century the Bavarians traditionally brewed darker ale. Handed down from generation to generation, the ancient recipe for this bottom-fermented beer is now experiencing a grand comeback. Instantly recognizable by its amber tone combined with a quaint “olde worlde” malty aroma and harmonious full-bodied taste, this unfiltered MAXLRAIN speciality in the good old swing-top closure bottle is enough to make the heart of any beer aesthete beat faster.

Pours a dark orange color with a medium white head. Lovely hazy appearance. Smell is faint, mostly malts and biscuits. Medium body with a somewhat creamy texture. Pretty high carbonation. Taste is mostly malts and caramel with subtle herbal notes. Slightly bitter finish. Overall, it’s not bad. Decent lager, much better then the Festbier.

500ml bottle. Slightly cloudy, faint orangey golden to amber colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Malty, grainy, bready husky aroma, some grassy malt spiciness. Taste is minimally sweet malty, a touch of caramel, some bready and grainy layers, grassy hoppy overtones. Relatively spicy, slightly slimy texture, OK.

Oct ’14. A 0.5 l fliptop bottle at The Beertija, Zagreb. It poured hazy golden body with medium sized head. Nice malty aroma, bread, biscuit and caramel, touched with yeast. Fine sweetish flavor, pleasant malty again. Caramel was weird but still there, then usual bread (milk bread) and some fruits, too. Yeast was less dominating than in aroma, giving some room for herbal hops. Medium bodied, fine, biscuit, yoghurt and lightly bitter finish. Not a bad beer.

Thanks to the most generous Ludo who shared this with some of us at the judges’ training at the Magic Beer Room! Poured a murky, opaque even golden body with a fresh, malty slightly grassy eggy aroma. Again, grainy, sweet, slightly eggy taste, notes of honey. Lacks bitterness, slightly too sweet. Hm. Not terrible, far from it, but it’s not a beer I’d try again that soon. 2.7 seems too low, 2.8 seems too high....

Hazy golden color; medium sized head. Simple aroma and simple flavor, papery malts; ordinary bitterness; reasonable body; but also a hint of veggies. Forgettable.
