It’s now “en vogue“ again – the popular Maxlrain SCHLOSS TRUNK. Well into the late nineteenth century the Bavarians traditionally brewed darker ale. Handed down from generation to generation, the ancient recipe for this bottom-fermented beer is now experiencing a grand comeback. Instantly recognizable by its amber tone combined with a quaint “olde worlde” malty aroma and harmonious full-bodied taste, this unfiltered MAXLRAIN speciality in the good old swing-top closure bottle is enough to make the heart of any beer aesthete beat faster.

bottle from Bierzwerg. Hazy amber colour, very creamy head. Malty, yeasty nose. Solid malty body with hints of nuts, slightly yeasty, with a shy yeasty fruitiness. Some grassy hops linger in the background. Smooth and enjoyable.

Schnacklflasche (Dank an Jonas!): Deep golden, hazy to cloudy, bigger fluffy off-white head with a good lace; sweet (toasty?) malty nose with a light "woody" hoppy background; light to moderate sweet-bitter flavour, light to medium bodied, soft; short sweetish-bitter finish. Pleasant and well rounded.....

(swing top bottle) Cloudy, golden colour with a dense medium-sized and slightly off-white foamy head. Yeasty and slightly bready malty aroma with subtle fruity notes and slightly herbal and spicy hops. Moderately sweet flavour, light to medium bodied with a calm carbonation. Yeasty (cara-)malty and slightly bready taste with herbal accents; moderately dry and slightly bitter hoppy finish. A bit boring but drinkable. 16.VI.10

Bottled fliptop (Beerangel, BB 09/2009). Clear golden-amber color, good white head. Grassy hops and lemon soap in the nose. Good malty brew, caramel, grassy hops, fruity notes with a twist. Malty, oily and slightly hoppy aftertaste. Balanced and enjoyable in its own style. My 3rd beer from Schlossbrauerei Maxlrain - seems to be at least above average brewery.

Bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours hazy orange color with a thin white head. Aroma is very very thin. Almost non existant. Very light malt aromas. Taste is wonderful. A nice malty body with a light bitterness and a sweet, honey flavor in the finish. Nicely balanced beer that would rate higher with some nose.

500ml swing-top bottle (BB.25.11.07) to celebrate a new edition of my latest book on early modern witchcraft. A bit unclear, dark amber body with a rocky, white foam, slowly reduced to a filmy head. Light aroma of caramel malts. Sweet and a rather tangy caramel taste throughout with vague hints of dark berries in the ending. Foamy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation (22.10.2007).

A hazy orange beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with a hint of alcohol, while the flavor besides being sweet malty has notes of caramel.
