This beer is collaboration between Dogfish Head, Stone Brewing Co. (Escondido, CA) and Victory Brewing Company (Downingtown, PA).

The idea for this beer germinated way back in 2003 when the three guys (Sam from Dogfish, Greg from Stone and Bill from Victory) formed the BUFF alliance (Brewers United for Freedom of Flavor) - a noble endeavor with the goal to highlight the passion and camaraderie of the American craft brew movement.

So, BUFF didn't really do anything (beyond talk a lot of talk) until 2010 when the three brewers finally got together to jointly brew at beer at the Stone Brewery. Saison du BUFF was first brewed at Stone and then replicated at each of the other two breweries - same recipe, same ingredients, three different breweries throughout 2010. The brewers have a repeat performance planned for 2012!

Saison du BUFF is a 6.8% ABV Saison brewed with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. The beer is brewed three times, once at each brewery using the same recipe. The expected release dates for each brew are as follows:

Pours hazy deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, yeast, herbs and hint of citrus. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long herbal, yeasty and fruity finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

bottle - Pours hazy gold with a lingering white head. It smells of herbals, especially sage, yeast, and some fruity notes. The flavor is moderately bitter and herbal with a pleasant fruity character. It has a medium body and a dry finish. Really tasty.

Shared a bottle, pint glass. Cloudy pale straw-yellow. The spices are not what I would expect in a great beer . . . and this isn’t great. But the beer is good: an interesting experience.

Rating from October 2010....Smells like a stank ass barnyard upon opening...pale golden color (piss??)....off white head...oh my.....yeah so it sat for a minute with the same pungent stank....way to stay true to the style DFH...bitter stinky flavor sharp and foul just not the brew for me...sadly I just don’t like this style very much

12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 6/10/2014. Pours fairly hazy deep golden color with a 1 finger dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big lemon, pear, white grape, pepper, clove, herbal, floral, grass, cracker, bread, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, herbal spicing, and pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of lemon, pear, white grape, pepper, clove, herbal, floral, grass, cracker, bread, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spice/herbal spice flavors on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, pear, white grape, pepper, clove, herbal, floral, grass, cracker, bread, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, herbal spicing, and pale malt flavors; with a great malt/yeast/spice balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and slightly bready mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent herbal spiced saison. All around great complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, herbal spicing, and pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Had this at the RB Pgh Halloween Spook-tacular Tasting/Drunkfest fall 2013, nice time at Hornydevil’s place, thanks James & Michelle! Had this side by side with the Stone version. A little stronger. Seems more medicinal than I like. Has some vanilla in there. Not much co2. Over, just seems like an old beer. Thanks to Hart for a chance to try this, you go mtoast.
