Contract brewed at De Proefbrouwerij for Beer52 using the Korean Magpie brewery brand.
The First Train is the morning edition of the Last Train. It’s a smooth, dark lagered ale, cold aged with coffee from our friends at Fritz Coffee Co. Every year we use a different type of coffee. This year we selected a single origin coffee from Kenya. This dark roasted coffee adds rich notes of fig, raisins and chocolate. The deep roasted character of our Baltic Porter is balanced by a slightly acidic caramel toffee finish.

Appearance is nearly black, a 2-3 finger foamy mocha head. Aroma- coffee, milk chocolate, nutty malt, almond, hop traces. Taste- sweet chocolate, toasty nutty malt, dark roast malt, caramel biscuit, nutty sweet finish.

[33cl can from the Beer52 selection for February.] An opaque dark brown pour with a stiff peaky caramel coloured head; a strong coffee aroma with some malt; then tasting of bitter coffee essence, deeply toasted malts and brown sugar; finishing with a lactic, burnt sugar taste, and more coffee. Pleasant enough, but rather strong on the coffee.

15th Feb 2019. 330ml can @ 6.5% ABV and 30 IBU. Brewed at De Proef, Belgium. Canned on 28th Dec 18, Best Before 28th Dec 19. Poured slowly into a thistle shaped 'Gordon' glass at home. A Beer 52 offering. Everything looks good in this glass; it's a deep ruby red colour, the head a full lightly tanned affair. loads of coffee esters in the nose, plenty of coffee flavours in the taste. Some vanilla tastes arrive as the beer warms a little in the glass, chocolate hints too. This is fine; no idea who is involved in brewing it, South Koreans or Belgians, don't care it's good!
