[50cl bottle from a farm shop near Tarporley.] A pale chestnut pour with a thin covering of beige head; malty aroma with a hint of spice; bittersweet taste with malt and caramel; and a dry finish with some nuts and bonfire toffee. A complex, old fashioned bitter- one to savour slowly.

Rocky off white head on a chestnut coloured body.
Minimal malt aroma.
Medium bodied, smooth & cloying.
Malt, toffee, burnt & berry tastes with a bitter finish.
Drinkable.

Cask at Black Lion, Nantwich. Pours the classic “bitter brown” with a small off-white head. The aroma has autumn fruits, nuts and malts. In the mouth it is slightly bitter, with flavours of autumn fruits and traditional hops plus traces of honey and ginger. Finish is fruity and slightly dry. Nice beer – rubbish name !

Bottle thanks to my step-dad. Pours clear copper with a thin off-white head. Aromas of caramel, light metallic notes. Taste is more of the same. Not a right lot going on. Sweet finish.

Handpull cask at the Wickstead Arms, Nantwich. Copper and clear with a small creamy white head. Lots of lacing. Caramel and sulphur in the aroma with a little bit of a vegetal note. Sweet taste - too sweet, really - with an astringent sulphur note in the finish. Low to medium carbonation. Not particularly impressive.

Bottle from Booths Supermarket, Media City. Amber with a head. Hoppy bitter that with a grittiness to its taste, has a mid-bitterness at best and is quite tasty within its style.
