Deep mahogany appearance. Superb creamy head, caramel and vanilla with a slight hop tang. Distinctive, creamy texture and full refreshing flavour. Impressively complex, with robust, interwoven malt and hop flavours that persist well past the last swallow. Simple rations such as roasted meat and hearty stews would be ideally paired with Old Contemptible

Bottle from Quality Save, Shipley. Copper-amber with a small head. Has some chocolate amongst its grainy darker-malt, and flavoursome tastes.

26th June 2015: 500ml bottle, BBD 31st July 2015. Poured into an ’Old Speckled Hen’ badged pint vase at home. Taken with soft cheeses, salted biscuits, olives and peppered German salami: a mini feast in fact. Looked really good in the glass, clear mahogany body and a smooth foam topping in beige. Aroma and taste is sweet caramel with a toffee feel, basic but just what my sweet tooth likes. Well carbonated, you can see the bubbles rising through the body, a little too well carbonated for my palate, but it’s not ’flat shit’ (as one of my mates calls them) like some bitters appear to be. Not rich enough or robust enough to be a ’smoking jacket in front of a roaring fire’ Winter Warmer, but still a very pleasant beer for those of us who prefer the sweeter brews to the sour or over bitter variety.
