Rich Amber Ale, a beer popular in Britain from the mid 1700’s until the outbreak of WWI. Flavours from Pale and Amber malts dominate with British hops giving balance and subtle undertones to this beer recreated to remember the days when the ports of The Wash were the gateway to the prosperous trade with the Baltic states.

500ml Bottle conditioned: BBD Mar 14, poured into an Abbot ale glass tankard @ home on 8th Dec 13. Slight gush as the bottle was opened, the pour produced an amber/brown bodied beer with a mini-haze to it. The head was a huge billowing pillow of white foam. Yeast and musty old wooden barrels came to mind from the smells I got: not unpleasant, but unexpected and very unusual. The taste was similar to the aroma in it’s flavours; musty wood and yeast with a hop sharpness and bitter bite. Different and enjoyable.

Light haze on this deep amber beer. Tidy pale cream coloured head. Palate is slightly soft and dry. Fine carbonation. Light malt with a little cream. Little dried fruits. Then startling flavours of estery cognac and rum! No alcohol heat but the flavours are quite distinct. Finishes semi dry. Not at all unpleasant but really quite odd.
