Bottle labeled as Alaskan Barley Wine Ale 2010 Pilot Series: Aroma is walnuts, maple syrup, and fresh split oak. Sweet and rustic. Clear garnet brown, thin yellow head, visous. Full body, tastefully warm. Carbonation is light and not too fizzy, which I like, particularly in barleywines. Flavor is cherries, blackberries. Subtle notes of twigs are also hiding in the background. A little cloying in the fnish. Adjuncts? Not as hoppy as I like in a barleywine, but but quite enjoyable.

22oz bottle, 2008 vintage. Pours a translucent, murky, deep caramel brown, with a thin, creamy beige head. Nose is great, the oxidation has set in but it’s manageable: vinous fruits, raisins, caramel, rum, coconuts, malty, brown sugar, sweet brown bread, apple cider, fall leafage. Flavor is just as good, really starting to mellow and blend together. Sweet, brown sugar, malty, caramel, apples, orange juice, a little wood pulp, raisins, apricot, toffee, a little cotton candy. Finish is full bodied, lightly sweet, lightly bitter, smooth and drinkable. Perfect age on this right now. Still some hop bite, no alcohol burn, really well balanced.

Bomber into snifter. 2009 vintage. Pours a mostly clear pretty reddish-orange hue with just a slight haze. Has a medium beige head that recedes fairly quick, leaving a collar of foam and some big bubbles floating on the surface. Aroma is pungent, mossy, citrusy, spicy...very big and in your face. Caramel, plum, baked apples and raisin scents come out as it warms. Taste is sweet with a bittersweet finish. Fruity, alcoholic, and malty. Carbonation is medium-high, body is very full. A complex, big beer that I admire more than I enjoy.

bouteille de 2008. couleur cuivre, mousse moka. Arôme, sucre brun, malt caramel, fruits noirs. Goût, malt caramel, malgré l’age, le houblon est loin de s’être atténué laissant une fine couche d’amertume. Note de sucre brun, fruit noir; figue, caramel au beurre, palais reste sec.

Deep brown, small beige head. Nose of alcohol, molasses. More of same in palate, big bodied, medium alcohol heat, but seems well blended

22 oz. bottle, pours orangey amber with a tiny head. Fantastic aroma of toffee, caramel and some subtle dark fruit notes. Flavour follows accordingly with the toffee / caramel dominating, and featuring quite a sweet palate (but not too much). Slight alcohol kick at the end, but the ABV is well-worked. A most excellent barley wine.

Delicious, rich, buttery. This beer is drinking very well, already, but I fully expect it to get even better with age. It’s just a great American Barleywine. The malt is strong and sweet without any off flavors. There’s a lot of caramel and a lot of barley flavor. The hops are still strong but less bitter than flavorful. The hops come through piney and maybe citric or floral. The feel is exquisite, full, velvety, warming. Alcohol warms the mouth and brightens the flavors. There are some notes of honey, but it could be my imagination. It’s a delicious beer, a satisfying barleywine.

Poured up at the 2010 Toronado Barleywine Festival with an amber body and thin tan head. The aroma is old crusty malts next to aged dates and plums creating an overall smooth light aroma. The taste is oh so smooth and sweet with molasses, chewy aged malts, caramel covered ginger, plums, some figs and a light amount of dates. Overall it’s on the sweet side but yet not overwhelmingly fruity or malty but rather striking a smooth tasty balance.

2007 vintage captured in a sweet trade with ratebeer superstar after4ever. Thanks buddy.
Pours deep clear amber with thin tan head. The aroma is semi rich, but not as rich as the Arctic Devil just was for the last beer, with fruity esters and some pine hops. The taste is rich and sweet with malty roasty yet sugar sweet maltiness moving into dark fruity esters of sweet Concord grape jam, ripe cherries, plums, dates and figs. It has a sizable amount of pine hop bitterness. Terrific American Barleywine.

Clear, garnet-tinged brown body with a fleeting tan head. The aroma is light caramel with vanilla and dark dried fruits. Sweet flavor, smooth body. Mild flavor that has little bitterness.
