Alaskan Barley Wine has been produced in limited edition vintages each year since its introduction in 2003. A big beer for big winters, this brew has garnered a steady following in Alaska. Bottled for the first time in 2007, the balanced flavor collaboration between hops, malt and high alcohol showcases the barley wine style, winning first place at the 2007 Toronado Barley Wine Festival and bronze at the 2008 World Beer Cup.

2008 Bottle:
Deep amber coloured body with brown highlights and a lightish tan head - very small though. Very bright aroma of vanilla, malt, oak, alcohol and a nice pit fruit scent. Full-bodied; Strong assertive taste of malt, yeast, raisins, pit fruits and a lot of alcohol - very nice. Potent aftertaste of nuts, raisins, caramel, brown sugar and a good bit of oak. Overall, a nice barley wine - not as complex as I’ve seend, but definitely a good one to try! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Bottleworks in Seattle, Washington on 25-April-2009, sampled at home in the ’real’ Washington (DC) on 23-May-2009.

2008 bottle thanks to blutt59 (now I can cellar my other bottle). Pours with a slightly brown head over a hazy ruby colored body. Aroma is floral with hops, honey, raisins, peaches and brandy. Taste is very sweet (bordering on cloying), candied raisins, and light hops. Syrupy mouthfeel, light bubbles.

22 oz bottle courtesy of bvc. 2007 Vintage. Pour is brown ruby cordovan, mostly clear with a 1/2 inch off white head. Lacing is nice. Aroma of malty caramel and grassy sweetness. Also, a nice dose of hay and floral hops behind that. As the nose opens, some scotchy smoky peatiness is perceptible as well. Taste is bright malty sweetness, still really a lot of floral and citrus hoppiness. The peat is ever so light in the very back of the finish, but is nice. Palate is medium, sweet, husky, mouth coating with lasting grassiness. Not any noticeable alcohol heat. Nice thanks Brandon.

Bottle: Poured a deep coper color ale with a medium foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light citrus hops with some sweet malt. Taste is also dominated by sweet malt with some light dry fruit and a dry bitter and citrusy finish courtesy of some West Coast hops. Body was about average for the style with some good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well made and even though I prefer my barleywine with some limited hops I thought this example was very well balanced and it is definitively one that I would like to try again.

2007 vintage Bottle pours out a dark amber topped with nice sand head. Aroma was great very sweet. Tons of caramel and pit fruit. Tast was more of the sweet pit fruit and brown sugar. The hops had mellowed out very well.

Bottle from 2007. Dark amber pour with a modest beige head. I found the aroma to be entrancing and thus this a horrible beer to have while playing poker. Rich tones of sweetness, malts, faded citrus hops, fruity, and vinous notes filled my nose as my chips found a new owner. The flavor continues a smooth and soothing quality of sweet maltiness, dark fruits, and more faded citrus hops. Excellent.
