Alaskan Barley Wine has been produced in limited edition vintages each year since its introduction in 2003. A big beer for big winters, this brew has garnered a steady following in Alaska. Bottled for the first time in 2007, the balanced flavor collaboration between hops, malt and high alcohol showcases the barley wine style, winning first place at the 2007 Toronado Barley Wine Festival and bronze at the 2008 World Beer Cup.

Bomber...2007 Bottle...Ruddy brown-tan head...nice drippy lacing...when the light shines through it, it looks like dark ripe cherries....sweet malt aromas-and alcohol soaked cherries....creamy body...flavors of alcohol initially, its bitter-sweet in the mouth...has cherry and prune essences, but soaked in booze...its a good barley, the style I enjoy--very balanced

2007 bottle. Aroma is just plain caramel. Brown color with a disappearing beige head. Strong malty flavors with floral hop. Exceptionally smooth. Not a trace of heat, and this is 10.4%. Quite an experience.

Thanks to beastiefan2k for splitting and order of this stuff from LS - I should have known that a brewer from a place this cold could do a barleywine right - dark ruby beer, with a head that disappears fast, and completely, making the beer look almost still - prune and fig greet the nose first, followed by caramel, black cherry, some mild spices, brandy - sweet, but not cloying, with a mild bitterness and spice character to balance (actually a bit closer to traditional british examples than most american barleywines) - a very mild smokiness makes things very interesting - a bit of brandy flavor is enhanced by an alcohol warmth, but the beer never becomes boozy - caramel and lots of dark fruits - brown sugar - spices become increasingly powerful as it warms, but that only adds to the overall warming character of the beer - and who doesn’t want a barleywine to make them feel warm and fuzzy inside?

Thanks to Skyview for sharing. A very west coast barleywine. Lots of bitter hops in the aroma. Flavor is balanced with sweet malt and loads of bitter, piney, grapefuity hops. Some sugar in there as well. Nearly indistinguishable from a IIPA, except for the heavy palate.

2007: Big head on a dark brown body. Aroma of peach, melon, chocolate, alcohol and light toffee....and lots of hops. Palate shows chcolate, hops...a clean profile with pleasing balance and a slight roastiness late.
2006: Hazy dark amber colour. Big chewy brown sugar aroma with a light toasty note. Smooth and sweet palate with further brown sugar malts and late alcoholic dryness. 8 4 8 4 17 = 4.1

[At GABF 2004, Vintage 2003] A hazy copper colored beer with a lasting orange head. The aroma is sweet and very hoppy. The flavor sweet malty with distinct notes of hops - as well as notes of oranges slices dipped in sugar. The alcohol is very well hidden - it can only be felt on the tongue.
