Collaborative works with Burnt Mill Brewery in England. Exploring English traditional SB(Special Bitter) with Japanese Ingredients
[Character]
The nutty, rich malt and yeast character of the style is reborn with grains that typify Japanese cuisine: soba and rice.
[Food Pairing]
Chicken with harbs、Root Vegitables、Pudding
[Naming]
This beer reinterprets the past using a new lens, thereby exploring new directions for an old world style.
[Brewer's Voice]
Brewed in collaboration with our mates at Burnt Mill, the inspiration for this beer was exploring what Special Bitter (SB), the quintessential English style, would taste like if it had been born in Japan instead of the UK. As this was a first for both sides, we deconstructed the style before rebuilding it around Soba (buckwheat) and roasted rice. This resulted in a lot of learning about both rice and soba in order to ensure their nuance remained in the beer without overpowering it. One of our most rewarding and unique collaborations to date!

KBC x Burnt Mill New Worlds Japanese Special Bitter 5% Orange brown with dense beige foam that lasts and once gone leaves a nice film above the beer. Malt forward aroma with honey, graham biscuits and tobacco. Medium bodied and clean with mild caramel and biscuit plus tobacco leaf. Very nicely done, a little dryer finish than I prefer but very enjoyable.

Malty as you’d expect. Nice hoppiness gives it a bit of a fizz. Nice

Can from the brewery. Malty, toasty, nutty nose, buckwheat comes through nicely, bit of dark chocolate and toasted caramel. Slightly hazy amber orange with a low, lacy head. Flavor is also toasty and nutty, toasted buckwheat and brown rice. Pretty interesting stuff. Body is light. Finish is toasty, slightly roasted, and bitter. Clean finish. This here is an example of when strange and original local ingredients actually work well in a beer. It matches the ESB style quite nicely.
