Draught at Fine Mousse on 4/24 and 4/25/15
High clarity in this bright golden/hay-colored beer with a large white head that shows strong retention.
Indeed quite juicy in the nose, chardonnay juice, light honey and moderate acidity (fruity, again, more grape-derived than anything). A touch of floral hop notes with light minerals and other light yeast notes. Alcohol pretty well-masked as is any actual barrel character.
I agree with much of what 3Fourths is saying here. Yes, there’s little to no Galaxy hop here. The whole time I was wondering if galaxie was a reference to something else as it’s just almost completely missing. Then, the barrel character. Also quite lacking. Some woodiness, perhaps, but it’s a stretch. And then there’s the question of it being a saison, which the brewer lists it as. Again, there are indeed Belgian influences, but it strikes me more of an American "Saison" than anything. Certainly no funk or even light farmy character.
Somehow, all that being said, I still really enjoyed the beer. I love French chardonnays and this is quite redolent. Juicy, though not cloying with enough biscuity malt presence and tight carbonation to keep it out of trouble. Ultimately a bit too heavy-handed on the chardonnay and a touch sweet overall, but it’s very clean and only lightly bitter with no barrel tannin or toasty oak astringency.
Again, rating is for a Belgian golden ale, not for a saison, of which this resembles little.
