As we more fully embrace the characteristics of each fruit that we source, we have somewhat reimagined our fruited Farmstead® ales. To more prominently represent those fruits and the variation of each harvest season, we let the fruit guide us in selecting from our range of barrel-aged Farmstead® ales—sometimes this will be a single base beer, other times it may be a blend of different barrels—all with the goal of best expressing the fruit’s unique aspects.

In this instance, we have blended Montmorency cherries from Allenholm in South Hero, Vt., and red raspberries from Elmore Roots in Wolcott, Vt., with a number of sympathetic barrels of Farmstead® ale to provide a thought representation of the fruits in season.

375mL bottle drunk 10/23/24. Clear cherry with light raspberry tones. Medium-sized, pinkish-heavy cream head slowly fizzles away. Bright, full, enveloping cherry is first and foremost in the nose. Holy shit, this is five years old and just couldn't be fruitier. It's a lovely, meaty, juicy cherry and is bolstered by tart, intense raspberry character in the very end. Stronger lactic acidity melds with the malic to provide high intensity but there is more levity from Brett and balance in the supportive malt. The flavor follows the nose only in its robust intensity. It is not heavily lactic, but rather Brett leads the way, though the cherry character remains front-and-center. And glorious it is; impossible to believe it to be five years old. Still meaty, waxy, tannic, juicy, round and expressive. Raspberry, again, contributes acidity and lighter flavors, to the finish. Malts are still as supple and supportive as ever. No thinning or even a bit of overattenuation. I see the relatively lower ratings for this and marvel at just how gracefully and elegantly, and in this case, very beneficially, Shaun's beers age. You certainly still get a sense of the strong acidity everyone points out, but like a red wine that needs years to soften and open, so, it seems, did this beer. An incredible treat. The cherry and Brett character rivalling all but the very best Belgian lambics I've tried.

Draft at HF. Pours clear, matte red-pink with a tight, creamy white topping. Rich cherry-putty aroma. Light sweet flavour with some sharp acidity, tart cherries, subtle sweet raspberry, some lemon. Light bodied with lively, spritzy carbonation. Cleansing, acidic finish. Nice and bright berry notes but a little on the sharp side.

Bottle thanks to William. Pours a hazy pink with small off white head. The aroma is cherry skin, funk, oak. Slick body, sweet cherry, raspberry, mineral, lacto, light oak, very good.
