(Draught at Mother Kelly's Vauxhall, London, 24 Nov 2024) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted, spicy nose with liquorice, ginger, chocolate and cough medicin. Malty, roasted, spicy taste with notes of chocolate, coffee, ginger, liquorice and a balanced roasty bitterness. Almost full body, with a touch of sweetness. Lots of ginger and liquorice. A bit weird, but really rich and tasty. Very nice.

Tight foamy tan head on a still black coloured body. Gingerbread & Lebkuchen aroma. Medium bodied, foamy & clean. Chocolate, Lebkuchen, orange, gingerbread & oat tastes with a lighter berry finish. Nice one.

440ml can. Pitch black with a big tan head. Aroma of ginger, dark chocolate, dark malts. Taste is dominated by the ginger, with dark chocolate and dark malts, dark fruits, big bitterness at the end. Contrary to previous years' reviews the ginger is overwhelmingly present this time round, far too much! But apart from that you can tell this is a really solid porter, everything else is on point. Mixed feelings on this one.

Black beer, thin head. Ginger is prominent in the aroma, with a bit of malt and lactose. Flavour has sweet toasty malt, spicy-sweet ginger again, a bit of coffee, maybe a little anise. Good body, nicely balanced and a warming, spiced finish. Lovely stuff.

On tap at Toms Tap & Brewhouse, Crewe. Pours pretty much jet black with a small cream head. There’s a strong aroma of ginger here and this continues in the mouth where it is bar far the dominant flavour. Roasted malts can also be detected plus hints of liquorice and dark fruits. Alcoholic strength comes through in the finish. A bit one dimensional, but excellent.

Bottle from Hoptimism. Day 21 of my advent calendar. Off black with a tan head. Aroma and taste aroma roasted malty bitter and slight spice. Ginger is subtle. Full body.

Tap, half-pint, shared with Finn at Burger + Beer Store, Kings Cross. Remaining beige head leaving lacing rings on the glass, pitch black in the glass. Vanilla sweet chocolate aromas, attractive. Creamy chocolate malts to the taste character, lactose beneath, slightly ice-cream impression. Smoothly roasted end, with sweet chocolate. Pretty nice sipper. (London 22.11.2021)
