Bottle. Nice box, special edition of barrel aged quadrupel for charity. Color: Lightly hazy copper, very thin beige head. Aroma: Malty, red wine, boozy hints. Taste: Malty, notes of dark dried fruit, subtle caramel notes. Vinuous and sweetish red wine notes. Bit boozy. Over moderate sweet, light bitterness. Nice one.

Special edition of La Trappe Quadrupel Oak Aged, aged in barrels from French winery Chateau de l’Horte; expensive luxury bottle from a luxury packing, big thanks to Craftmember for sharing this one. Open, thinnish, off-white, unstable head on a clear coppery bronze beer with amber glow and lively sparkling, misty with sediment. Aroma of caramel candy, honey, sugared tea, that typical bubblegummy banana effect of the regular beer, wine-soaked raisins, fermenting apple, wet oak wood including its classic vanilla association, clove, pear drops, candyfloss, almost burnt brown sugar – but actual wine remaining very faint so I guess the barrels have been thoroughly cleaned before use. Sweet, with banana, yellow raisin and candied date notes, fizzily carbonated (more so than expected really) adding a bit of ‘fake’ sourishness so to speak, quickly shifting to slick, sweet caramelliness with a layer of dark sugar on top, developing a very mild toasty-bitter accent as it goes, together with a herbal hop bitter note; vanilla-like aromas from the oak wood do appear retronasally, and a very dim sourishness with an equally dim grape flavour reminds me that this was indeed wine barrel aged. Clove, bubblegum and grape sugar linger in the end, caramel however remaining dominant, all warmed up by very obvious, rum-like alcohol. Feels very slick and smooth, almost ‘macro-brewed’ if you get my drift, with too much of that basic La Trappe Quadrupel sweetness (and ‘bubblegumminess’) and too little of the depth and complexity wine barrel ageing is capable of; I think leaving more of the wine inside, no matter how unpredictable the result may sometimes be, would have lead to a much more interesting beer. Not quite worth its hefty price tag, if you ask me.

Robijnrood/amberkleurig bier matig schuim. Smaak is fruitig, hoppig, en licht houtig. Nasmaak is licht hoppig. 8,4,8,3,16.

75 cl bottle shared at tasting with Johnny and TomHendriksen. Thanks guys! Reddish to darker reddish color, small off-white head. Aroma and flavor are malts, decently sweet, softly sugary, light caramel. Hmm red wine influence? Hmm, yeah it could have some red wine. Nice.
