Cherry Lambic Sour Ale

Winner of a gold medal at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival, Transatlantique Kriek begins its life in oaken vessels of Gert Christiaens’ Oud Beersel, a 130-year-old lambic brewery in the Zenne valley of Belgium – home of authentic Lambic beer. After time spent aging in wood, Oud Beersel’s lambic is blended with tart Polish cherries and shipped across the Atlantic to New Belgium. In concert with Oud Beersel’s cherry lambic, or Kriek, we blend an equal portion of golden sour ale matured for 1 – 3 years in our oak vessels called foeders. 50% Sour Golden Ale blended with 50% Traditional Cherry Lambic Ale leads to an intense cherry nose, a sour flash across the palate and a refreshing, mouthwatering finish.

Bottle: Poured a reddish hazy color beer with almost no head or carbonation. Aroma is limited to some sour cherry. Taste is quite simply the Boon Kriek with something else (I guess I should call it the NB ale) added that seems to offset some of the sourness. I thought the idea of mixing lambic with another ale was something new and was looking forward to this experience. After trying this, I wondering if maybe we shouldn’t touch or tamper those wonderful lambic. Overall, this is not bad but doesn’t bring anything new to Boon Kriek.

Bottled, thanks Dr.Bill! Cloudy bright red. BValsamic black cherry aroma. Fairly sweet, light bodied with clean rounded mouthfeel. Lightly lemony finish. Nice aroma, but from there on it disappoints - too sweet and lacking in character.

A light red hazy beer with a beige disappearing head. The aroma is sweet cherry with notes of marcipan. The flavor is sweet cherry with artificial notes of marcipan. I must admit I’m disappointed in this one - way too sweet for a kriek.

Man grows cherries with own hands, creates wonderful lambic beer in Belgium, swims across Atlantic ocean carrying beer in one hand. Runs to Fort Collins. The best fruit lambic ever is created by the innovative and quality brewers at New Belgium and then to top all of this hard work off. . . . . . . .THEY F*CKING FILTER THE GOD D**NED THING!!!!!!! Well all that didnt really happen, but the last part. Just trying to illusrate the point that if there is one thing I talk about the most in my ratings and in my experiences with beer, it is my utter disgust of filtering a beer. Quality beers should be unfiltered at all costs. This suffers so much because it is filtered. Complex aroma and flavor??? Gone. Good belgian carbonation in the bottle??? Gone. Nice hazy color? Gone. Good substantial finish with lingering complexities?? Gone. Why do they filter this??? It would be incredible unfiltered.

Nice red color to this brew. Head starts out with a bright pink head that dissappears quickly. The flavor is a sweet-tart cherry, may be a little to sweet and to tart to really get a good mouthfull. Can't really complain about this beer. It has its qualities in the look and smell but a little to tart at the end for my tastes.

Vibrant pinkish red with foaming pinkish head. Strong cherry aroma but with artificial hints of cherry candy. An understated musty/leather aroma is in there. A touch of sweet up front, a light tartness takes over in the middle. Cherries dominate. Light bitterness, perhaps even a hint of fading metallic flavor, well up in the finish. Surprisingly light in carbonation, giving this a juicy character - I'd prefer a lively carbonation - as it is it approaches cloying. Mouthfeel is almost empty. An interesting experiment but the original kriek lambic from Boon was probably better than the blended final product - difficult to discern the properties of the second beer. I might speculate that this beer would appeal to those who want to like a fruit beer but find the "fruited wheats" too sweet and artificial and the true lambics too tart and funky.

(draught - very young) Rosy-red clear colour; pink little rim. Heavy cherry-gum nose, rich. Little something behind it, malt-like. Very interesting tart taste, fruity (sweet & sour cherries), nothing artificial - Brett character is not outspoken. Light mouthfeel but nowhere thin. Fruit obviously helps to fill in. Long tart aftertaste. Great & promessing. Would benefit enormously from laying down (colour excepted). I think this ought to be classified under lambic-fruit!
