A hybrid beer unlike any other. Belgian fermentation, American hops, Virginia foothills deep-well water and Kentucky bourbon barrels. Bizarrely delicious.

Rich deep copper coloured body with a hint of an amber glow with a thick, five centimetre tall tan head - very nice. Aroma of oak, yeast, coriander seed, a hint of curacao and some nice light hops to balance the malt. Medium-bodied; Nice grassy and hay flavour at first with a good yeast strain flavour with a hint of apples and concord grapes with a relatively light malt flavour and almost no sweetness and hops to speak of - just some light spices and herbal notes at the finish. Aftertaste is a bit complex with an alcohol bite, some light fruit notes, a little spice and the pungent yeast characteristic. Overall, not a bad beer, and a decent beer for sure, but not as good as I was expecting from looking at the rankings. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Trader Joe’s in Alexandria (Old Town), Virginia on 05-October-2012 for US$9.99 sampled at home in Washington on 19-December-2012.

Location: Draft at the Brewpub, 11/21/12
Aroma: The nose of this one is bourbon, spice, and some citrus hops
Appearance: It pours a hazy orange color with a medium white head and lace
Flavor: The taste is quite an interesting mix of bourbon, Belgian flavors, and citrusy hops
Palate: This one has a medium body, with some light heat, and a fairly soft carbonation
Overall Impression: This one is a nice mix of fruity and bourbony flavors, with a nice Belgian yeast presence too. The whole combination works well together and made for one of my favorite beers of the visit to Blue Mountain.

Had this at the NOVA Fall Brewfest. Poured a dark orange/red color with a small off-white head. Aroma was notes of barrel, wood, vanilla notes, some spice character and some citrus peels. Flavor was a bit more barrel than I expected it to be, but after the initial sip, I found that the barrel subsided and the other flavors took over. Sweet caramel notes, spice notes, plenty of earthy notes, and some wild yeasties. I wonder how this one would taste after a few more months.

Tap at Gingerman, pours golden orange with nice citrus and yeasty nose. Tastes of Belgian yeast, grapefruit, fruity, ginger, bubblegum, and bourbon. Pretty tasty but a touch thin on palate.

Bottle @ Dan’s house, courtesy of arminjewell. Pours a slightly violet, reddish appearance with a nicely carbonated, tan head. Quite floral, a bit juicy, lightly boozy, light cranberry aroma. Tangy berry, light whiskey, vanilla, a little juicy, herbal flavor. Kind of tasty but nothing overall special.

750ml bottle pours a translucent, light brown with some frothy, off white head. Nose was fairly approachable, citrus, nectarine, dried leaves, some lemon. Don’t get a ton of barrel in the nose. Flavor is sweet, malty, citrus, light caramel, light vanilla. Well balanced all the way through. This wouldn’t strike you as being barrel aged because it doesn’t hit you over the head with the barrel. Smooth, lightly hoppy finish.

Served on draft at the brewery. Batch 2. Pours a hazy amber color with a large creamy off-white head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of citrus, wood, whisky, caramel, bread. The taste is citrus, oak, coconut, whisky and caramel. Medium bodied, high carbonation, well balanced. Very nice beer.

Boozy peach, triple sec, cherry, and curacao nose. Cloudy copper, thin head. Malty fruity sweetness, delicate peach and cherry flavor. Alcohol seems excessive. Drinks rather like a Biere de Garde.
