With the fifth release in Tom J Newell’s Patrons Project - a conceptual and literal totem pole of imperial stouts, with the cans designed to be stacked on top of each other - the summit is in sight, so we’re taking this opportunity to reflect on the series so far. (100 EBC).
“Rejoice!” strips back all of the regalia - no adjuncts, no barrel ageing, no collaborations, just a laser focus on the bare bones of an Imperial Stout. The sum total of everything we’ve learned about the style by tinkering with the recipe over its previous four iterations, and set us up for the final ascent.
Focusing on the essence of an Imperial Stout, the malt bill, we’ve introduced Black Malt to the grist, imbuing the silky smooth, treacle-toffee, milk-chocolate base with a gnarly dose of raisin, bitter, tannic dark chocolate, and the warmth of toasted tobacco.

440ml can kindly shared by Finn. Dissipating fawn-coloured head, scattered lacing, black in the glass. Lightly roasted smell, dark chocolate malts. Well balanced taste profile of chocolate malts and dark berry-fruits, molasses backbone. Long-lived, smooth and warming malt-driven end. Well bodied. Good drinking. (Tromsø 17.03.2022).

Black, small light brown head. Smell is roasty, some coffee, licorice, molasses. Nice thickness, lightly creamy, chewey. Taste is pretty umami, lots of molasses, bit salty. Roast is nicely done, some soft dark chocolate in the aftertaste. Very nicely made.
