Hardywood Bourbon Cru is brewed in the fashion of the abbey quadrupel, the grand cru of many of Belgium’s revered monastic breweries. Bourbon Cru displays a sunset orange hue with a substantial head and brilliant clarity after months of barrel ageing. The maturity and melding of flavors brought on by the freshly drained, half-decade old Virginia bourbon barrels from Fredericksburg’s A. Smith Bowman Distillery lends an extraordinary sense of harmony to Bourbon Cru. Almond toffee and oaky vanilla aromatics give way to dark cherries, raisins and mature whiskey. A bit of plum flavor is greeted by caramel overtones and an assertive yet incredibly rounded body and a lingering, bourbon-laced finish.

Hardywood Bourbon Cru Bourbon BA Quad 12% 18 IBU This was amber brown with little foam but a rich plum/raisins, sweet malts aroma that’s classic quad. The fairly full body delivers more of the same with added richness and a woodsy sweet bourbon finish. Incredibly smooth with no hint of the ABV but you definitely feel it afterwards. Well done and I’m not a big quad guy.

Beautiful firey red amber color. Beautiful sweet malty nose of raisins, plums, cherries, molasses and lots of bourbon and oak. It’s exactly what I expected. Malty mouth, that is off sweet, low carbonation, lots of character and honestly I generally feel there are too many high abv beers that are too sweet for my liking but in this case, I think the somewhat lack of sweetness holds back the beer. Still the abv never shows too much, not really warming and bourbon isn’t too pronounced at the end. It’s essentially a very quaffable beer. At 12% that is dangerous. I certainly like this a lot but it’s not a beer I’d fall in love with

Brown-deep amber colored, medium beige creamy head. Aroma is of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, bourbon, some alcohol notes. Taste is quite sweet, malty, caramel and toffee, some brown sugar, bit nutty, some fruity notes, vanilla and bourbon, some alcohol and warmth, medium bitterness. Full bodied, average carbonation, oily. Very good. Maybe a bit too alcoholic but not over the top.

Pours rather clear, dark copper. Small white head fades instantly. Smell is bit of the barrel, but not overly intense. Taste is sharp, bit bourbon, oak. Basebeer seems very weak, as it doesnt stand up to the bourbon at all, and the bourbon isnt even that accessive. Rather thin body. Medium low carbo. Very drinkable, especially for the abv, but a bit weak to my expectations.

Keg at Brewdog Soho. A clear nut brown coloured pour with a lasting fine beige head. Aroma is vanilla, rough oak, toasted brown sugars, cakey malts. Raisin loaf.. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, brown sugars, woody, bark, dried raisin, vanilla oak and spicy woody. Lingering oak tannin. Palate is semi sweet, little thin, medium bodied, spicy finish. Moderate to high carbonation. Lingering hot alcohol. Disappointed.
