Many thanks to Benjamin &Jolien for the 'spare' bottle. Hazy orange, big, stable, frothy, white head. Aroma of orange zest & blossom, yeast, bread crust, apple peel, clove, pepper, honey. Taste has sweetish orange & apple; malt body of bread crust, yeast and wheat, bit spicy. Grassy hoppy finish, spicy-herbal, lingering perfumey orange & honey. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Quenching on a hot spring's day.

Saison by sympathetic Brouwbar, the lovely brewpub in the historical city centre of Ghent; launched in December but apparently already sold out a the pub so I cannot thank Benjamin and Jolien (the owners) enough for obtaining a bottle for me to rate – this kind of customer service is rare and sincerely moves me. Medium thick, moussy, egg-white, stable head over a lightly misty, deep apricot blonde beer with ‘metallic’ deep golden glow. Aroma of bread crust, dried thyme, oxidized apple peel, dry hay, linseed, dry breakfast cereals, green banana, clove, minerals and a vague note of potato juice somewhere. Crisp onset, very active to even sharp carbonation but this is not out of place in a saison; green banana and apple peel fruitiness but in a very clean, restrained way, never too sweet or estery. Slick cereally maltiness, light bready edge, leading to a hop bitter finish with thyme-, mugwort- and dandelion-like aspects, but all remaining subtle and gentle; minerally side notes linger, adding to the overall refreshing and quenching character of the beer. Very elegant, streamlined and accessible, and in that way fitting seamlessly in Brouwbar’s house style – no exuberant farmhouse ambitions here, just a plain, old-fashioned, dry and quenching saison, and contrary to many other recent Belgian attempts at this style, nowhere overly sweet or spicy. I could easily chug a few of these on a benign spring afternoon.

4/XII/21 - on tap @ Stroom brewery (Ghent), BB: n/a (2021-1531)

Little cloudy orange blond beer, small dense creamy beige to off-white head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: fruity, quite some ripe banana, malty. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: malty, bit sweet, fruity, grains, pretty bitter, bit spicy. Aftertaste: ripe banana, some grains, malty, caramel, maybe a bit full bodied for a saison, spicy.
