Barrel-Aged Coconut Stout

Behold the legend of Cocomungo – this devastating Imperial Stout was aged for over a year in Willett bourbon barrels, and brewed with double roasted crystal malt, maple syrup, and toasted coconut. Layer upon layer of coconut, maple, and rich chocolate await, backed by whiskey and oak notes from the barrel-aging.

12 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Nose is full of rich maple syrup, deep coconut, toasted oak, and light vanilla. Flavour is extremely rich, with intense bourbon barrels, huge maple syrup, rich coconut, and plenty of alcohol. Very sweet but the barrel/alcohol help cut down on the perceived sugar. Really nicely constructed, rich, powerful slow sipping dessert BA stout.

Found on tap at some random pizza place in Denver - 8 bucks a 10 ounce - viscous black pour - fairly sweet vanilla, coconut, and bourbon, with some chocolate and espresso from the malt - the barrel treatment is present but not boozy, and the sweetness is tempered fairly well - overall, it does not present as strong as it is, for which I am glad - it’s pretty darn good.

This imperial stout came to me from Half Time. Wanted it because: 1. Brewed by Three Floyds 2. Barrel aged 3. Coconut 4. Rather potent. Let us see how all that works out. Snifter ready to go, I make the pour. Dark brown, just a shade short of black completed by a minimal touch of khaki tan foam, plentiful carbonation fortunately. I smell dark chocolate, roast, grain and perhaps a whiff of coconut. The taste is quite different, the scent much expanded and really fine. First off, the sensation is thick, rather viscous. Then comes chocolate and coconut, some nuts and figs. Reminds me of an Almond Joy from back in the day. Very sweet, a small amount of bitterness. Oh yes, here comes the bourbony alcohol too. If I have a complaint, it is the insincere, toss-off label. This is a sincere imperial stout, impressive, my best in a long time in a style I put near the top.

Aromas are dark malt, fudge and dates. Flavors are similar to nose, sweet and a bit tarry. A little bit of coconut and not overly sweet but still, been done before.
