19 March 2022. At Brouwbar. Shared with the lovely Anke!

Hazy yellow, stable, foamy, white head. Aroma of juicy peach, papaya, ripe lychee, tangerine, starfruit, stonefruit-flavoured yoghurt, wet pepper. Taste has sweet peach, lychee & papaya, softly bitter and citrusy sourish over doughy maltiness. Floral hoppy finish, quite juicy in its tropical fruit and tangerine aspects, very slightly peppery. Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Fresh brews like these are a delight.

Cloudy blond yellow beer, small creamy off-white head, little stable, adhesive. Aroma: nice, very fruity, juicy, tropical fruits, pineapple, little funky, overripe tropical fruits, papaya, a bit dank. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: juicy, nice bitterness, tropical fruits, citrus, zesty, grapefruit, dry, a bit herbal, lovely! Aftertaste: dry, wry bitterness, tropical fruits, juicy, citrus, more citrus still, grapefruit, lovely stuff, really like it!

‘Near-double’ New England IPA, Brouwbar’s newest to date, in fact nothing more than a stronger version of the original NI08, with the same hops, just to see what the effect of the alcohol content is on the taste. Egg-white, medium thick, moussy, stable head, cloudy yolk-yellow robe with apricot glow. Aroma of mango, canned peach, rambutan, ripe pineapple, wodka somewhere in the distance, papaja, lemon verbena, Key lime pie, meringue even, dank armpit sweat aspect. Sweet onset with sourish touch and very clean, mango, papaya and pineapple aspects but relatively subdued and kept in check; medium carb, smooth creamy mouthfeel. Doughy and cookie-ish malt core under vibrant hoppiness, repeating the mango and pineapple notes but combined with a growing ‘citrusiness’ (orange peel, mandarin) and a tail of peppery bitterness; the aromas are indeed pushed forward by the alcohol, which in itself remains well hidden. Gracefully aromatic, expressive update of the basic version, indeed a tad more aromatic, but still the aromas remain relatively restrained to NEIPA standards, true to Brouwbar’s trusted house style. Enjoyed this one.
