Catherine II, the 18th century Empress of Russia, is said to have been the inspiration behind the creation of the Imperial Russian Stout, an intensely flavored, big, dark ale, with a noticeable alcohol presence. Legend has it that Catherine also had a voracious sexual appetite; she was known to have many lovers, but the story about the stallion was probably a myth. At Swamp Head we have a passion for the creation of great craft beers, so we infused our Imperial Russian Stout with organic cocoa nibs and fair trade coffee, to create a sensual stout with an extra kick. We think Catherine’s Passion would be aroused by this stout...ale.

Bottle at the July 2023 DC RB Tasting. Poured a nearly pitch black color, maybe dark cola, small wispy head. Aroma was super big chocolate notes, roast, woody vanilla. Dark, bakers chocolate with woody vanilla barrel. Robust and tasty.

750ml bottle pours a murky black with some beige head. Nose is malty, spicy, some black pepper, inky kinda, some neutral barrel or wood. Flavor is malt, pepper is there but more the character and less the heat, sour cherry. Full, hot finish.

Bottle from Homer. Pours opaque black with a large dark brown creamy head that dissipates slowly with nice lacing. Aroma is roasty, green pepper, some chili pepper, a bit of coffee. Flavor is light sweet, medium plus bitter, roasty, green peppers, a bit of a chili kick, coffee. Fullish body, a bit hot from ABV. Lingering bitterness. Too much green pepper for me, but not bad otherwise.

Bottle thanks to Team Florida. Pours a very dark brown with beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is strong roast, cocoa, dark chocolate, wood. Medium mouthfeel with nice roast, chocolate, wood, light dry finish. Very good.

On draught at Dunedin, served in a goblet. The beer pours black with a minimal light beige head that disappears to an outer ring quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted coffee and malt, plus some dark chocolate. Rich body with flavors of black coffee, dark malts, bittersweet chocolate and hops. The finish is roasty with a long coffee aftertaste. Good beer all around.

Tasted at the Cigar City – Swamp Head tap take-over event. It pours deep dark void with mocha head. The aroma is big with bold levels of roasted malts as well as some meaty dry chocolate notes, vanilla and black strap molasses at the end of the draw. The taste is just as bold with smooth rich maltiness rolling into dark roasted malts, dark roasted coffee, chocolate brownie and booze infused spicy black strap molasses into the finish. Just plain old yummy.
