The 1349 Ales are the result of a collaboration between three highly potent forces Norwegian metal masters 1349, American feinsmecker brewery Surly, and Norwegian rising brewery star Lervig. With these ales, we wanted to explore the powers of combined forces from different worlds of craftsmanship and to manifest our ideas of what proper beers are. We have all brought our minds, hearts and souls to this project. Revel in Dionysian pleasures!
As the
plague silenced 2/3rd's of Norway's population back in the day, this dark beverage will scatter ashes along its way leaving you breathless, but wanting more. The 1349 Black Ale is our Strange Old Brew; an absolutely massive beer loaded with all the power malts, hops and freshly ground espresso coffee has to offer, and rounded off with a distinguishable note of apocalyptic delicacy.
This calls for a toast; now have a sip from our massive cauldron of chaos.

Bottle. Pours clear black, medium tan head, dissipates fairly quickly leaving nice residual and lacing. Aroma is black IPA all the way, hoppy pine, citrus, roasted malts, cocoa. Flavor is medium sweet, fully bitter, there’s the coffee, mixed in with an initial burst of toffee and roasted malts, quickly swallowed by piney grapefruit hops. Full body, creamy mouthfeel, tons of lingering bitterness. This beer as a lot of good things going on, but unfortunately they just dont blend well, leaving the product a bit like nails on a chalkboard.

Slett ikke heavy metal, heller "a velvet uppercut".

(Bottle, 0.33 l - BB 1/1/2015, at Pikkulintu, 20150109) The beer poured black. Its head was small and lightly brown. Aroma had burnt malts, coffee and liquorice. Palate was full bodied and warming with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, liquorice, sweetness, coffee and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet, roasty and bitter. A nice coffee-infused roasty stout.

On tap at What’s Brewing. A big, dense, dark beige head forms over a dark brown body. The aroma is heavily hopped, with roasted malts, molasses, dark sugar, some pine cones and alcohol. Sort of like a Black IPA on acid. A touch of acidity in the flavor, with roasted malts, molasses and dark sugar, as well as lots of hop flavors and bitterness. It’s full-bodied and warming, with a suitable carbonation. Lasting bitter finish. A bit on the alcoholic side this one, but sure moreish. 141031

Small glass, draught at Taphouse. Bright, near-black coloured body. A fragile layer at the top. Nice lacework. Fine aromas of roasted malts and dark marmalade. Blended taste character of black malts, chocolate, coffee, and liquorice, supported by dark fruits. Warming alcohol to it. Full bodied. Oily palate. Tasty (Copenhagen 28.11.2014).
