Through two decades of epic live performances, ups and downs, breakups and reunions, self-financed basement sessions and major-label releases, there’s been one constant for indie legends Guided by Voices: lots and lots of American lager.

To celebrate the band’s independent spirit and the 20th anniversary of the classic album Bee Thousand, we've brewed the bracing but highly quaffable BEER Thousand. This imperial lager includes 10 grains and 10 hop varieties and clocks in at 10% ABV.

10x10x10 = BEER Thousand.

No sipper, BEER Thousand looks like a light lager but is amplified like a barleywine. Subtle strawberry and tropical banana notes in the aroma aroma give way to a sweet and malty flavor and a clean, warm finish. Scarily drinkable for its size and demeanor, this one’s sure to be a crowd pleaser. It goes down perfectly between barrages of low-fi 90-second jams.

"I can't believe it's been 20 years," says GBV frontman Robert Pollard. "But I'll drink to that."

Bottle. Honey, light banana, barley malt and herbal hay aroma. Golden yellow with minimal head. Very sweet banana, light berry, and grainy malt flavor. Alcohol finish. Okay but rough.

bottle - Pours clear, deep gold with a white head. It smells of bready malt, some esters, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet bready malts with some vague fruity notes and mild hops bitterness on the back end. It’s medium bodied and the finish is on the dry side. It’s fairly good but I have higher expectations from DFH.

Almond and lacquer nose, lemony highlights. Clear amber, thin head. Oaky lemon, with lacquer overtones. Full body, alcohol noticeable, heavy carbonation. Low hop profile, rather bock-ish, kind of a triple hellerbock. It’s not my thing, but it’s unique, and even I can see myself in the mood for it.

12 oz. bottle, pours a clear pale copper golden with a small white head. Aroma is very jumbled, with lots of sugar, alcohol, dirty yeasty notes, and caramel malt - what a mess. Flavour is much the same thing, with lots of messy sugary malt and dirty yeasty notes. Not a cohesive beer by any means. Hard to drink.

Bottle - Nice sweet rich malts. Clear gold with a rich white head. Sweet skunky oily pale malts with a skunky finish. Bleh.

Draft at Horrock’s. Clean, sharp straw color with no head. Just a bit shy of what I look for in an Imperial pilsner, but still okay. Crisp, but not crisp enough. Hoppy enough for the style. High ABV nicely masked--no booziness.

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours brassy gold with a slight white head. Aroma is light bready with mixed fruits. Near full bodied. Flavor is lightly bready with mixed fruits, and something suggesting a hint of fusil oils. "The flavor is sweet, malty and boozy up front with a warm alcohol bite and a clean, slightly bitter finish." Not gonna argue with that. Except the clean, maybe. It’s like a high quality 24 oz can, if such exists.

New Beer Distributors, NYC 12ounce ($3.50): Pours amber with a white head. Aroma is fruitiness, sugar, banana, and lots of malts. The alcohol is well covered. The beer is not exactly hoppy. It is actually much more on the sweet side. Body ain’t too heavy either. It was kind of underwhelming.

12 oz bottle pour. Pours a golden color with a grains aroma. A lot going on for a light looking lager. A lot more malty flavor than hops, but they are clearly there. Small hints of fruit throughout with a yeast, strange lotion finish. Decent beer, but too much going on. All the ingredients must be fighting each other in there. Not bad though.

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, bottled on 10/31/2014. Pours slightly hazy deep golden color with a 1 finger dense white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big lemon, melon, apple, pear, white grape, honey, cracker, bread, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and unique aromas with good balance and complexity of pale malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester notes; with good strength. A bit too perfumey/estery in the nose. Taste of big lemon, melon, pear, apple, white grape, honey, cracker, bread, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy herbal/peppery bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, melon, pear, apple, white grape, honey, cracker, bread, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice balance, complexity, and robustness of pale malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly crisp/sticky, and lightly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good imperial pale lager style. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of pale malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.
