Through two decades of epic live performances, ups and downs, breakups and reunions, self-financed basement sessions and major-label releases, there’s been one constant for indie legends Guided by Voices: lots and lots of American lager.

To celebrate the band’s independent spirit and the 20th anniversary of the classic album Bee Thousand, we've brewed the bracing but highly quaffable BEER Thousand. This imperial lager includes 10 grains and 10 hop varieties and clocks in at 10% ABV.

10x10x10 = BEER Thousand.

No sipper, BEER Thousand looks like a light lager but is amplified like a barleywine. Subtle strawberry and tropical banana notes in the aroma aroma give way to a sweet and malty flavor and a clean, warm finish. Scarily drinkable for its size and demeanor, this one’s sure to be a crowd pleaser. It goes down perfectly between barrages of low-fi 90-second jams.

"I can't believe it's been 20 years," says GBV frontman Robert Pollard. "But I'll drink to that."

Bottle from Happy’s Market, Ellensburg, WA
Hazy golden color, medium sized head. It has the grainy maltiness of Lagers, it avoids the classic issues of strong lagers, bu t the hops are not expressive.
Nice beer overall.

16th February 2015
Lightly hazy gold beer, tidy cream colour head. Palate is airy and semi dry, mild fine carbonation. Smooth wheaty malts, little cream. Candy sweet bubblegum ester. Little ripe fruits. Smooth dry finish. Mmmm. A bit odd but inoffensive.

Does not come across as a high ABV beer. Strong malt presence from the moment you open the bottle. Cereal grain through and through, no warmth or burn. Tasty lager

Bottle thanks to duchammer via Matt_ducharme shared at Anchorage Jan ’15 Tasting: Poured a hazy orange yellow with a white head. Aroma was fruity. Taste was super carbonated bubbles, nice fresh hops, fruit and didn’t reveal the alcohol content at all.

80’s indie band? That’s harsh. 750ml bottle. Filtered honey-orange body. Thin, patchy, off-white head. I get the strawberry-banana tones, and they are odd. Kind of mead-like, very sweet. It is sort of drinkable, in a strong pale lager way. It has depth, which I enjoy. the hops certainly aren’t one-dimensional. There is a honey sweetness as well. A pretty tasty end-product, but rather weak in describing what is going on in the beer on the labels. 10 hops? Awesome! Tell me which 10. Pretty awesome strong lager at the end of the day.

Location: 12 oz bottle shared by jcos, 2/6/15

Aroma: This one has an odd aroma of grains, some grass, and some booze
Appearance: It pours a mostly clear golden color with a small white ring of head and not much lace
Flavor: The flavor is a little sweet, somewhat boozy, with a mild bitterness
Palate: The body is medium-plus, fairly hot, with a dry, alcoholic finish
Overall Impression: It's almost a grainy and grassy rubbing alcohol. I don't really mean that to sound terrible. It isn't terrible, but it isn't good either. I didn't get the strawberry or banana at all.

Rate #2000! Big thanks to the local DC RateBeer tasting group and everyone who has helped me get here! 12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. Very slightly hazy orange with half a finger of off-white head. Aromas of citrus, stone fruit, white wine, booze, berries. Tastes of stone fruit, tropical fruit, alcohol, wheat, some strawberry and banana. Medium body with a dry finish.
