Through two decades of epic live performances, ups and downs, breakups and reunions, self-financed basement sessions and major-label releases, there’s been one constant for indie legends Guided by Voices: lots and lots of American lager.

To celebrate the band’s independent spirit and the 20th anniversary of the classic album Bee Thousand, we've brewed the bracing but highly quaffable BEER Thousand. This imperial lager includes 10 grains and 10 hop varieties and clocks in at 10% ABV.

10x10x10 = BEER Thousand.

No sipper, BEER Thousand looks like a light lager but is amplified like a barleywine. Subtle strawberry and tropical banana notes in the aroma aroma give way to a sweet and malty flavor and a clean, warm finish. Scarily drinkable for its size and demeanor, this one’s sure to be a crowd pleaser. It goes down perfectly between barrages of low-fi 90-second jams.

"I can't believe it's been 20 years," says GBV frontman Robert Pollard. "But I'll drink to that."

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark golden-amber color with a large fluffy white head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was tangy and sweet sugar, golden fruits, booze and yeast. The flavor was boozy with notes of table sugar, tangy golden fruits, yeastiness and bread. Medium length finish. The booziness grows and starts to distract. Moderately full bodied. Interesting.

Bottle from Bert’s Crystal clear deep golden color with a decent sized tightly bubbled white head that dissipates rather quickly. Aromas of light fruit and a weird oxidative smell thats somewhere between sherry and plastic. Some yeasty aromas and light bready malt. The flavor Is a bit fruity tart with light berry and hop bitterness. Light alcohol flavor and light warming. This one has a lot going on, probably too much, and unfortunately the flavors aren’t meshing very well.

Bottle with a date of 10/31/14, clear gold color thin soapy head, aroma is mild fruit with lots of graininess. Lots of pale grain.

Flavor is simple and clean. Typical lager flavor is not here, lots of grain and weak, un described fruit hints. Pretty easy to drink considering the ABV, no alcohol flavor. I guess if you like imperial lagers or pilsners, you should enjoy this.

Pours deep gold into a Dogfish glass, Bright white head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Sweet citrus and cracked grain aromas. Hot sweet caramel, pumpernickel and corn. Tastes like an Eastern European Imperial lager... which is not a compliment.

On tap at alehouse in falls church it is a clear golden color with a whisp of a head. The aroma is somewhat floral and the taste is bitter and hAs some suggestion of citrus which is tempered by tangy maltiness

Draft pour at Dogfish Head Alehouse - Falls Church. Poured a clear golden orange color, some small bubbles, a little lacing, just a wispy head though. Aroma is slightly non-descript. Some light sweet malt notes. Flavor is mostly just sweet malt notes. Certainly not a disaster, but it’s kind of bland and boring. I know they were going for something like a cheap pale lager, but with an extreme abv, but I think they lost something here. It is only marginally boozy, but most of what I’m getting is just general sweetness, something I often find common in some of these strange limited release beers from these guys. I want to really like it...
