Ella (Black Friday)

Apple Brandy a huge element here. But still plenty of tobacco and leather. Caramel and a hint of smoke. A big syrupy beer with a lot of character, but not something I necessarily love. Brown pour with decent head. Can from Pizzaboy.

Draft. Murky orange hued brown color. You know those beers that are all barrels and no beer? Well this is it. Who could even tell there is a big Belgian beer here. Just straight up alcohol barrel. Some apple sweetness. Maybe this needs and Impy stout rather than this base beer.

Sample at Beer Meets Wood on 09/23/2017. Dark reddish-brown color with a medium thick beige head that diminishes gradually to a film. Small patches of lace. Aroma of oak, malt, yeast and fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, ripe fruit, earthy yeast and oak. The finish is oaky and fruity with a malty aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Bottle @ Uncle Babe’s, Ghent. 11.5 % ABV. Hazy red brown with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel, dried fruit, wood and brandy. Flavor is very sweet and moderate bitter. Sweet and moderate bitter finish with warming alcohol. Oily. 190317

Pours unclear brown, not much head. Smell is intense, bit boozy, oak. Rather sweet. Taste is intense, rarher boozy, grains, brandy. Ok

As Free Will Black Friday (a reference to Bruery’s Black Tuesday?), at Uncle Babe’s in Gent. Loose and bubbly, pale beige head dissolving in the middle but leaving a thin rim around the edge; very dark hazy bronze robe with warm wine-red hue. Strong aroma of candied dates, caramel candy, calvados, vanilla-ish oak wood, sweet cider, raisins soaked in brown rum, pear brandy, stewed plums, brown sugar, chocolate. Sweet, estery and very fruity onset, lots of red apple, date, fig and some banana with a light tartness, soft carbo, very fluffy, rounded, thick and smooth mouthfeel, brown sugar sweetness paired with caramelly malt sweetness, very lightly chocolatey perhaps, leading to a boozy, long finish of pleasant oak tannins including retronasal vague vanilla, some light earthiness and - more than anything else - heating, yet still not astringent, very pronounced calvados- or rum-like alcohol. Rich, sweet, fruity sipper, a bit too boozy to my personal taste, but certainly a very accomplished beer, with the soft fluffiness, dark fruits and residual brown sugar sweetness in the mouth that befits a true quadrupel.

Lots of brandy and molasses, sweet and boozy. Plenty of raisins resting in spirit, Scott says Pedro Ximinez (he’s right). Really decent. A6 A3 T7 P4 Ov15 3.5

Bottle. Brandy/oak, vanilla, chocolate, apple, a bit spicy. Cloudy dark reddish brown, flat. balanced flavor, apples, caramel, good, some booze. Soft, low carbonation. Good stuff.
