This sturdy beer is strong both in taste and alcohol content (9%), boasting undeniably appealing flavours. The people of Montignies-sur-Roc, which lies to the south of Mons in the province of Hainaut, are known locally as Montagnards. It seemed perfectly natural then for a beer brewed in the village to be named La Montagnarde. Enlivened by a very sharp bouquet of fruitiness and spiciness, it has a stark taste, somewhere between intense bitterness and dreamy caramel. Absolutely sugar-free, this pure malt beer plays with a variety of flavours that soften the bitterness. There is a pepperiness at the back of the mouth and a tingling on the tongue. Its qualities continue to develop in the mouth, each element of its flavour having the chance to express itself individually. It is very active in the glass too, giving it a generous, long-lasting head. Its long finish highlights the ever-present bitterness, with a little less of the caramel. The finale evokes a kind of sugar-free gingerbread.
In 2019 the new 1979 label was introduced to commemorate the 40th jubilee of the brewery.

75cl bottle. Slight hazy Amber with big off white head. Apricot, peach, sweet malts, marzipan, light spices (ras al hanout), light flowery towards the finish. Taste is mainly sweet with light bitter finish. Fruity and light but still full of taste and with medium to full body. Nice.

330ml bottle ordered through Vinmonopolet, Bestillingsutvalget. Partially gushing bottle pour. Hazy, apricot coloured body, Slim, white head. Poor lacing. Dried fruity nose with a touch of almond. Spiced dried fruits and caramel flavours. Mid-sweet fruity ending joined by warming alcohol. Well bodied. Very sweet, but alright as a long lasting sipper (Tromsø 18.09.2014).

Belgian-style barley wine since 1986 with a deep amber colour, hazy with often quite large protein flakes, off-white, thinnish head. Very yeasty character, spicy too (apparently dandelions are used in it, adding bitterness), caramelly malt base, fruity, citrus, warming alcohol in the finish. Lots of personality in this one, I like it a lot.

Flaske 330ml fra Vinmonopolet, Bestillingsutvalget. Her var det litt gushing på gang! Mørk aprikosfarget. Nesten ikke skum. Uklar. Aroma av mørke plommer. Smaken er søt frukt. God balanse. Holder seg søt. (En plass må jo alkoholen være). Partikler i siste kvelling. Mye sedimenter igjen på flaska.

Bottle, lot L122909682. Pours hazy dark golden with sediments, and a fiery mocha finger thick quickly dissipating head. Aroma is roasted malts with camphor and edgy herbal notes, as well as nuts, dark fruits and whiffs of earthy yeast. Medium body with average carbonation. Flavour is sweet with fruity yeast, plums, kandi and roasted malts with bread.

Duft av friske frukter og krydder. Dunkel gulbrun farge. Tynt lag skum, noe heng langs kant. Nydelig fruktig smak med en fin sødme. Dette kan mer enn gjerne drikkes igjen.

Bottle from the LCBO. Pours a a hazy brownish amber with a two finger tan head that settles quickly. Nose is yeast, sweet roasted malts, some spice and candied fruit. Starts a bit sour with sweet toffee and some citrus in the middle ending up with ginger and pepper creating a dry bitterness. Medium slick body with quite active carbonation. There is a lot going on here.

SAQ special import with a best before date of 22/08/2015. Pours a hazy rich amber colour with a big frothy warm head, good retention and thick creamy lacing. Nutty yeast aromas at first pour, but then, mild sourness with notes of citrus and alcohol. Caramel eventually comes. The taste starts off with a tad sourness but goes into the caramel malt. The sweetness is well-balanced by the yeast. Again, hints of nuts with some grass in the finish. The mouthfeel is smooth with no burning and hardly any warming. I think this is the most caramel I have had in a Belgian ale. Pretty nice overall.
