This sturdy beer is strong both in taste and alcohol content (9%), boasting undeniably appealing flavours. The people of Montignies-sur-Roc, which lies to the south of Mons in the province of Hainaut, are known locally as Montagnards. It seemed perfectly natural then for a beer brewed in the village to be named La Montagnarde. Enlivened by a very sharp bouquet of fruitiness and spiciness, it has a stark taste, somewhere between intense bitterness and dreamy caramel. Absolutely sugar-free, this pure malt beer plays with a variety of flavours that soften the bitterness. There is a pepperiness at the back of the mouth and a tingling on the tongue. Its qualities continue to develop in the mouth, each element of its flavour having the chance to express itself individually. It is very active in the glass too, giving it a generous, long-lasting head. Its long finish highlights the ever-present bitterness, with a little less of the caramel. The finale evokes a kind of sugar-free gingerbread.
In 2019 the new 1979 label was introduced to commemorate the 40th jubilee of the brewery.

opalescent dark golden to amber colour, minimal off-white head; aroma of honey and floral notes, dried fruits, caramel and maybe someminiml vanilla (?); taste is dominated by candy sugar sweetness, floral and honey notes again, caramel, some spiciness and alcoholic warmth; not bad at all!

Pours greenish golden; head is ivory-coloured. Aromas of figtree leaf, plantain, black chocolate... Taste is balanced between sour and sweet, a little low on the bitter side. Full body.

Bottle at home in London with JP - sourced from Beermerchants. Opens with a pop and appears to be a slow gusher; but tonight I’m on my game and get the pour going in time. Alas, there are many floaty bits in this amber-orange beer - which also has a surprisingly weak, foamy off-white head. The nose holds strong notes of butterscotch, toffee, stewed fruits, candi sugar, Belgian yeast, berries. Big sweet flavor, fairly sticky, with some sturdy fruit character, bready malts, toffee, meaty dates, slight grain husk. Medium bodied with average, active carbonation; the spritliness of the bubbles definitely lifts the palate. Lightly warming finish with some yeast character, esters, more berries, ripe and lightly dried fruits, hearty bread, more toffee. Nice beer, just nothing to lift it above the pack.
