A fierce and powerful creature was the Black Boar. This huge beast played a massive role in shaping ancient Irish history. Famously the Black Boar killed, and was killed by Diarmuid the warrior while he answered the challenge of his archrival Fionn Mac Cumhail in the mountain of Ben Bulben in County Sligo. The Black Boar has come to represent resilience. Fitting then that this black, silky Imperial Stout should carry the name of one of ancient Ireland’s most notorious icons.

Bottle from Appellation Wines Comely Bank. Appearance - opaque black with a thin but attractive fawn head. Nose - dark chocolate, light smoke and molasses. An inkling of coffee. Taste - more dark chocolate. The caramel and smoke come in next and the sticky molasses brings in the rear. Palate - medium to full bodied with a creamy texture. Elegant and dry finish. Overall - lovely stuff.

Bottle. Black pour. Aroma of soft oat, licorice, chocolate, mocha and malt. Taste has licorice, oatmeal, chocolate, mocha and some more licorice. Not bad, but the licorice is not for me.
