A fierce and powerful creature was the Black Boar. This huge beast played a massive role in shaping ancient Irish history. Famously the Black Boar killed, and was killed by Diarmuid the warrior while he answered the challenge of his archrival Fionn Mac Cumhail in the mountain of Ben Bulben in County Sligo. The Black Boar has come to represent resilience. Fitting then that this black, silky Imperial Stout should carry the name of one of ancient Ireland’s most notorious icons.

Pitch black, good frothy tan head, good retention and lacing. Aroma roasted malt, cocoa, dark fruit, bit vanilla. Smooth taste, light light heavy sweet and medium bitter, roasty, dark chocolate, vanilla, light fruity, raisins, light ashy notes. Full-bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, sweetbitter aftertaste, chocolate, raisins, hint of alcohol. Rich, well-balanced and tasty, alcohol well-hidden so handle with care, excellent.

Shared with my girlfriend at home. Pours black with a fine sheet of head. Aroma is malty, loads of dark malts. Very roasty. Sweet, caramel and molasses, quite a bit of coffee. Even quite hoppy! Medium to heavy body, oily mouthfeel. Flavour is malty and sweet, with caramel and molasses. Complex and layered. Roasty with notes of coffee, notes of fruity coffee. A lovely impy. Really well done.

Bottle from Bottle Baron. Black body with a thin beige head. Faint lacing. Aroma of Dr Pepper, meaty malts and Marmite. Flavour of nuts, treacle and alcohol. Medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. Quite boozy but a decent beer at a great price.
