A fierce and powerful creature was the Black Boar. This huge beast played a massive role in shaping ancient Irish history. Famously the Black Boar killed, and was killed by Diarmuid the warrior while he answered the challenge of his archrival Fionn Mac Cumhail in the mountain of Ben Bulben in County Sligo. The Black Boar has come to represent resilience. Fitting then that this black, silky Imperial Stout should carry the name of one of ancient Ireland’s most notorious icons.

Bottle from Cotteridge wines. Deep dark mahogany no head. Aroma has coffee, chocolate and toasted malt. Taste mainly sweet.

At a tasting, thanks, small bubbly creamy brown head, aroma of dark bread, coffee with hints of mushrooms and vanila, flavor of coffee and dark chocolate, quite strong bitterness, medium bodied. Feels a bit light for an imp and quite easy to drink.

Bottleshare at Mr Smith’s pad. Thanks to Danny. Opaque dark brown beer, thin pale tan head. Palate is smooth and semi dry. Smooth dark malts, some tang. Unsweet dark chocolate. Tangy spicy dark fruits. Dry tangy dark malty finish. Not bad.

Bottle shared at Leighton’s place 14/04/2016. Many thanks to Daniel for this one. Dark mahogany brown reddy coloured pour with a small halo of tan head. Aroma is some alcohol, dark cocoa, dried fruit. Flavour is composed of tart roast, liquorice, rich dark choc, hint of wood. Palate is medium full, sweet and tart, moderate carbonation. Lingering rich dark choc, earth.

Bottle shared in W2 - big thanks to Danii. Pours black-brown with a creamy, tan head. Well roasted malts on the nose, rich cocoa, scorched earth, dried berries. Medium to big sweet flavour with notes of alcohol, burnt wood, bittersweet baking cocoa, raisins, burnt toast. Full bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carboantion. Warming finish, with bittersweet dark chocolate, strong roast, dried dark fruits, scorched earth. Quite rich overall. Decent depth. Solid stuff.

Bottle split at Bespin, thanks to Danyell, 14/04/16. Black topped with a dirty tan swirl that dissipates to edgeing. Nose is liqourice, spice, toffee fudge, fruit cake, chocolate. Taste comprises chocolate, boozey strokes, fruit cake, dates, earthy. Full bodied, oily feel, slick, light warming alcohol in the close. Decent enough impy - ticks all the boxes.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks Stas. Black with a tan head. Aroma of roast, some coffee, dark fruits, a bit of alcohol. Bittersweet flavor with roast, coffee, chocolate, dark fruits, and a bitter finish. Medium to full-bodied, rounded. Very good.
