Deriving its name from Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale of madness and murder, our newest Smokestack Series release takes a predictably lighthearted approach to the subject of sourness. The subtle acidity of Tell-Tale Tart is answered by a soft, biscuity malt character, making this a sour ale that suggests, rather than announcing its tartness. Beginning with a bracing sharpness at first sip, the ale mellows on the palate to a smooth and faintly lingering finish.

Bottle. bbf date is not readable on the bottle. very nice complex and wholesome sourish aroma, well balanced. Flavor is perhaps a little bit boring for a sour beer, i miss the spiciness from belgian yeasts, however, it is well rounded and the sour is amply balanced by malts and leathery notes. This could both be used as a great sipper, or could be had in more busy environments

Bottle, 7 years old, 0.355l. Aroma is funky vinous, citrusy, grainy and floral. Pours cloudy dark brown color with thin quickly diminishing tan-like head and average sparkling appearance. Taste starts tart citrusy and dried fruity, following is caramelly, toasted and slightly medicinal, mouthfeel is smooth and crisp, while finish is very mild bitter. Medium body, slick texture and lively carbonation in palate. Oldie but goldie…

Clear ruby and light brown coloured body with an almost coppered tint and a single centimetre tall tan or off-white head fades to just a thin layer quite quickly. Aroma of soured and tart fruit with a dose of funky yeast, oak, cedar and a touch of fruits near the end with blueberries and raspberries the strongest. Light to Medium-bodied; Deep oaky and dry flavours at first with a lot of fruit notes showing raspberries and blueberries with the woodsy flavours along with the lightly tart and kettle-soured flavours from the yeast, but the dryness is even more central. Aftertaste shows some dry and tart flavours with the fruit-based sweetness, but the yeast hits and leaves the palate relatively dry and simplistic. Overall, a decent 'sour' or 'tart' beer that really isn't either - more of an oaky/dry kettle-slightly-soured beer that shows some light fruit, some odd interpretations of styles coupled with some more robust fruit and malt flavours with a definite dry and oaky flavour throughout. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Fair Lakes (Fairfax), Virginia on 16-February-2016 for US$2,99 sampled at home in Washington on 08-July-2018, nearly two and a half years later.
