Il nome di questa birra significa letteralmente vecchio bradipo in fiammingo e vuole celebrare l’icontro della nostra realtà Brada, situata in Italia, vicino Bologna, con il birrificio Oud Beersel, nel Pajotteland, in Belgio.
L’illustrazione in etichetta vede il celebre castello di Beersel – simbolo del birrificio – sullo sfondo di una statua che si erige al centro del lago antistante. Questo monumento è ispirato alla scultura marmorea sepolclare ad opera di Putti (‘800) e dedicata ad Anna Maria Ferreris (fiamminga nata a Bruxelles), presente nel suggestivo cimitero monumentale la Certosa, a Bologna. La statua è una rappresentazione allegorica dell’inesorabile scorrere del tempo – a noi caro nei nostri affinamenti –, e risulta quanto mai simbolica, essendo dedicata ad una donna fiamminga che ha poi vissuto la sua vita nella città felsinea.

Visto il nostro lavoro incentrato su birre wild e sour (e affinamenti in legno), poter utilizzare in un blend un Lambic tradizionale – birra a fermentazione spontanea dal Pajottenland, Belgio –, è per noi un onore e una bellissima opportunità di abbraccio con una cultura brassicola da cui siamo profondamente affascinati.
Siamo doppiamente contenti di questa collaborazione con Gert Christiaens – protagonista nel 2005 della rinascita moderna di questo celebre birrificio belga – in quanto gli affinamenti di Oud Beersel sono contraddistinti da grande eleganza ed equilibrio, caratteristiche che sentiamo profondamente affini alla filosofia produttiva della nostra Cantina Brassicola: semplicità al posto di spettacolarizzazioni, sfumature anzichè picchi.

330ml bottle from the Rusty Pub in Moscow. Pours foggy gold with a thin white head. Aroma is funky, brett, citrus and barnyard. Taste is medium sour, citrus, vinious, funky. Dry and tart finish.

Bottle in the Sicilian mountains, at Masseria Susafa, 3rd August 2020. Pours a rich straw orange with champagne bubbles. Aroma is grape skin, musty, earthy funk, tart fruit. Taste is apple, tart fruit, wood, complex as hell, grape skin, funk and brett, musty, farmyard. Wow this has depth, gorgeous lambic

Bottle from eebria. I absolutely loved this beer, amazingly complex that I’m afraid my rate won’t do it justice. Hazy orange colour with a thin head. Aroma citrus, yeasty, dried fruity. Taste started sour but develops flavours of caramel fruit and light spice. Crisp body.

Bottle. Beer Central, Sheffield. Mostly clear, pale gold. Fine white head. Nose has clean oak. Light brett. Wine dregs. Could be red or white for me. Dunno. Taste is tart and super dry, with a faint, grape juice sweetness. Light to medium body. Crisp, fine carbonation. Lightly acidic. Tart and dry, and grape skin sweetness to finish.

Head gone in seconds, very clear metallic golden beer. Very floral, almost soapy nose. Sweet, and then just-not-sourness; again floral, blossoms, non-sour lemon if that makes sense. Sweet cider apples. A bit lame, as something lagered too long to the open air, despite some carbonation remaining. Light body. Very nice beer indeed, but the origins had me hoping for more.

Bottle. Pours yellow. Aroma and flavor are sour, fruity, sweet, citrus, lemon. Finish is lemon with slight sweetness. Overall: good.

From bottle @ Carnivale Brettanomyces. Bretty funky aroma. Bready, citrus. Moderately sour, citric bready flavor. Peach. Soft brett. Nice.
