Strong dark ale – or quadrupel – by this Belgian coast-based client brewery, classically hopped with Magnum, Hallertau Mittelfrüh and Hallertau Perle. Medium thick, moussey, membrane-lacing pale yellowish beige head over an initially clear caramel brown beer with ruddy-reddish glow, misty with sediment. Aroma of dry caramel, halfripe banana, tea, bubblegum, Ersatz chocolate (‘Koetjesreep’), unsalted peanuts, toffee, clove, nutmeg, dried fig, hints of glue, rusk and wet dog. Fruity onset, some banana but restrainedly so, hints of fig, dried lingonberries and pear, moderately carbonated with smooth, bit bubblegummy mouthfeel, lean and slick, in fact even a tad thin for this kind of beer; some dark candi sugar sweetness round a caramelly and slightly peanutty core, ending with a mild toasty-bitterish accent as well as something vaguely metallic. Softly bittering floral and herbal hops in the end, followed by gin-like, warming but nowhere obnoxious alcohol, accentuating the bitter aspect of the malts and hops, so that the whole ends rather dryish. Balanced, streamlined, ‘easy’ quad, clearly directed at a larger audience – so in that sense quite a predictable beer, no surprises here, but it will do the job.

Bottle from Dranken Vande Woude and drunk at home Dark brown colour lasting beige head. Like the blond just a bit too obvious brown malt and light burn on finish. Just that bit of burn basic malty strong brown beer.

22 March 2022. At Sjefs, Nieuwpoort. Shared with the lovely Anke.

Hazy dark brown, stable, foamy, beige head. Aroma of cheese, walnut, raisin, fig, milk chocolate, toast, jam. Taste has sweet fig, pear & raisin; toasty, brown-bready malt base with a nutty accent. Herbal hoppy finish, more dried fruit, yeast & caramel, softly warming liqueur-like alcohol. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. Correct, just goes down well.

Dark brown colour, beige foam. Nose of caramel, dried fruit, some chocolate. Not bad, not very good either.
