BrewDog stout with sea salt, with an aroma that according to the can includes “burning pirate ship”… Can from Geers near Ghent. Medium thick, pale greyish-ecru coloured, shred-lacing head, slowly showing gaps but retaining well as a ring on top of a blackish beer with mahogany-reddish edges of about half an inch deep. Aroma of unsugared black chocolate, salmiak, dried bladderwort, toffee, tar, black pipe tobacco, bizarre aspect of incense when warming up – and even candle wax, toasted walnut, dry beef stock cubes, gravy, bayleaf. Rounded onset, restrained in sweetness (very vague dried fig note) but more outspoken in umami, with a beef stock-like character, as well as, as promised, clear saltiness on the sides, bladderwort- and soy sauce-like; spritzy but ‘fine’ carbonation, slick bitter chocolatey and toasty bitter malts with deep sourish undertone of roasted grain and ongoing saltiness, which, in combination with a subtle toffee sweetness within, makes for an overall effect very reminiscent of salmiak and salty liquorish candy (the kind my grandmother liked and I hated when I was a kid); roasted coffee bitterness ensues, reinforced by a long-stretched, very peppery hop bitter kick. The umami and salty notes softly linger but a pleasant, spicy bitterness is the dominant factor in the end. Quite outspoken, this salted stout, but everything fits well together so say about BrewDog what you want (having themselves become the big corporate company they once rebelled against and all), but they still make damn good beer.

At Beers 2019, small stable creamy head, deep brown color with dark red hues, aroma of chocolate, minerals and light roastiness, flavor of dark chocolate with brine, coal, green peppr and a charred wood bitterness. Nice and enjoyable.
