The time in apple brandy barrels lends a freshness, not unlike sweet red-apple, as well as dark fruit flavours that almost lean towards tangy. In this case, the oak-ageing has helped all of the flavours to become smooth and well-integrated with no rough edges and a nice touch of coffee bitterness on the finish to balance the fruit character.

Black with a small tan head. Aroma of tonka, chocolate, caramel, oak, vanilla, apple brandy coming out. Lovely boozy Christmas chocolates. Flavour is heavy sweet. Full bodied with alcohol warmth in the finish and soft carbonation.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from HOTM. Pours oily black with a modest, creamy mocha head. Big sweet flavour, rich chocolate, fudge, vanilla, coconut, raisins, torched wood. Full bodied, oily and chewy, with fine carbonation. Warming finish, lots more gooey rocky road fudge, mellow roast, dark fruits, burnt toffee. Quite delicious.

Bottle. CW online. Thick pour. Sits black with a thin dense tan swirl. Very leggy. Nose has brandy truffle chocolate. Light, apple like tang. Milky coffee. Fruit cake batter. Some woody notes. Taste is sweet and chocolate rich. Twangy and vinous. Silky smooth mouthfeel. Fine carbonation. Nice warmth. More of the twangy bitterness to finish. Great stout in that it doesn’t err towards silly pastry. Rich and smooth throughout.

Bottle at home, from CW online, 15/12/21. Pitch black with a dirty tan cap that flirts briefly then dissipates to a swirl. Nose is sweet malts, toffee fudge, coconut shavings, brown sugar melt, dark fruit rinds, mellow barrel tunes. Taste comprises melted chocolate pot, coconut, unctuous dark fruit rinds, light spice, sweet malts, light spice balance, mellow brandy whisper. Full bodied, viscous oily feel, big warming kiss of alcohol at the curtain call. Sad to have finished this most excellent series!
