Taster pour at NH Brewfest. Appearance is dark, dark brown--virtually opaque--no discernible sparkle, beige-to-light-brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, light smoke. Taste is dominant smoke, with roasted malts. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with thin texture, average-to-lively carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, there's not much complexity here--just smoke and roast--but it is done well.

22 oz. bottle purchased at Village Market, Hampton Falls. Deep brown color in my pint glass. Very thin beige head that left light lace. Smoke on the nose for sure! Flavors of coca powder, chocolate, mild traces of toffee and smoke throughout the sip. Mild lingering smoke after the sip. Soft level of carbonation with a Medium body. I have to admit, smoked is NOT something I drink often. Not a style I normally enjoy. But Throwback has one here that I can share with a friend and not be put off.

Bottle. Initially smoked meat and an underlying rotted type aroma, but as it warmed, chocolate, dark fruits, and vanilla become apparent, and the rotted aroma disappeared. Black brown with a small tan head. Fruity smoked meat, chocolate malt, dark fruit, and light acidic flavor. Medium body with a dry finish. Nice smooth smoky flavor without the bitter acrid flavor that sometimes comes with smoke. Nicely done.

On tap at Firefly Pours a solid dark brown bordering on black with a thinnish tan head that was all but gone when the glass arrived at my table. Smells, well, as advertised. Smoky phenols dominate the aroma letting almost nothing else through. Hints of chocolate and roast on the outer fringes, but this one is a smoke bomb! Taste is again smoky, but some chocolate, caramel, licorice find their way onto my palette. Medium to thick body, creamy smooth mouthfeel, light to moderate level of carbonation. As a porter the smoke on this is overdone, it dominates the beer rather than enhancing it. If you called this a rauchbeir I may have scored a bit higher.
