APA dubbed a “Ghentian pale ale », with rye and oats and dry-hopped with Citra and Idaho 7. Snow white, moussy, medium thick head lacing in shreds on a hazy yellow blonde beer with vaguely greenish tinge and disparate sparkling. Aroma of dried lemon peel, unripe banana, dry cereals, green mango, moist white pepper, minerals, old potatoes, unripe pineapple, freshly mown lawn, straw. Very spritzy onset, numbing even and overcarbonated for the style, disrupting restrained and ‘clean’ fruity impressions of unripe banana and green pear; slick but quite ‘full’ body, cereally and grainy pale maltiness firmly hopped by peppery, leafy, grapefruity hops, with drying and quenching effect but lacking a bit in New World aromas I expect from an APA (and from the hops used for dry-hopping here). Not bad, very easily drinking, ‘basic’ Dok style APA but less IPA-like bitterness and more New World hop aromas would have made it more memorable – and put it more firmly in old APA territory. Then again, if the mayor of Ghent likes it as is apparently the case, who am I to disagree…
