Named for a retired California Western Railroad steam engine on the Fort Bragg to Willits run through the Redwoods, Old No. 38 Stout is a smooth, firm-bodied stout with the toasted character and coffee notes of dark malts and roasted barley.

Bottle. Not much aroma here, though I let it warm. Poured deep black with a thick tan head. Full flavour of coffee, toast and malt. Lingering coffee and malt finish. Another good one from North Coast.

12 fl oz bottle. Pours black with a huge creamy and tan head. Roasted malt and somewhat wet woody hops note. Flavour is hardroasted malt and solid bitter. Goes into a more smooth flavour before the finish with a creamy texture containing notes of coffee and malt. Mild chocolate note too. Dry bitter finish with more of the same roasted malt flavour coming through.

Pours with a largish, creamy, light brown head covering a black body. Lots of coffee, dark chocolate and flowers in the aroma. Taste is of coffee grounds, bitterness, and caramel. Watery mouthfeel, with light carbonation.

Quickly descending beige head, really dark brown body, not quite black. Roasted malt aroma, with coffee and chocolate. Main taste aside from the roasted malts was of bitter dark chocolate. This is a little on the sweet side. Hints of coffee are in this beer. Not as thick as I would have liked it, probably would be better off the tap than out of the bottle.

Bought in Kolding.Black with small beige head.Aroma of licorice and coffee,feels rosted and mild a littel to thin to be a good stout but o.k.

Black with medium light brown head. Aroma has trong coffee notes, roasted malt and chcolate. Flavor is sweet with roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Somewhat watery ind the end.

Near black with a large deep tan head. Sweet roasted malts, molasses, coffee, chocolate, and soft sour dark fruits in the aroma. Flavor is a little on the harsh side. Intense roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, nutty, with the dark fruits nearly hidden. Nice body. A real nice stout, though maybe a tad harsh. Could use a little mellowing.

Short stubby bottle. Chocolaty aroma with a very attractive pour. Black and thick. The flavor is almost repulsive but strangely attractive, with the coffee and dark chocolate and stuff. Barely any carbonation but much more than a nitro pour. It’ starts out creamy with each sip then coats like flat paint. Another example of a good west coast beer from the USA. Back of throat specimen that acts like meat that has been overcooked on the grill. Almost as good as Carlow OHaras Celtic Stout or Marzonis Stone Mason Stout but with a little less manners. IMHO certainly better than Murphys Irish Stout, Mendocino Black Hawk Stout and Bare Knuckle Stout. Longish lingering burned back palate finish.

Bottle: Ebony pour with a large beige head and light lacing. Nose is mild of toasted malt, coffee, and cocoa. Flavor is malty, roasty, and mild coffee. Not real distinct flavor - mostly the roasted malt tones. I’ll stick with Old Rasputin.

Bouteille 12oz, courtoisie de Hogtownharry. De couleur noire-rouge et transparente. Nez de malt rôti, d’un mélange de chocolat noir et au lait, moyen de café noir, légèrement fruité (raisins, notes de prunes) et de crème (notes lactiques) ainsi qu’avec des notes de noix et de houblon herbeux. Moyenne-mince en bouche avec un pétillement moyen et une texture moyennement crémeuse aux petites notes huileuses. Goût de chocolat au lait sucré (reste présent en arrière-goût) et léger de crème (légèrement lactique) ainsi qu’un léger goût fruité (léger de raisins notes de prunes, traces de cassis) et aux faibles traces notes fumées lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute rapidement un goût moyennement amer de malt bien rôti (faibles notes brûlées) et léger de chocolat noir et un goût de café qui augmente progressivement tout au long de la gorgée jusqu’en finale ou l’on retrouve un léger goût de houblon herbeux (petites notes florales) ainsi que des notes de noix. Post-goût long-moyen et aux petites notes sèches, moyennement amer de rôti, de chocolat au lait, de café et de houblon herbeux avec des notes fruitées (moût de raisins) et de noix.
