Game on!

Can from a local bottle shop. Aroma is pretty wheaty with citrussy notes, fruity hop, touch of banana, lightly some tropical notes. Flavour is light bitter and sweetish. Body is medium. Refreshing, fruity and a bit hoppy. Nice.

Atypical Weissbier by Jopen, in being brewed with only malted wheats without barley - something which has been tried in American wheat ales a few times in the earlier days of craft brewing with little success, but traditionally only encountered in smoked form in the old Polish Grodziskie or Grätzer, which is obviously not the same as Bavarian style Weissbier... So without a solid frame of reference, I guess this one will be difficult to judge - a nice challenge so again many thanks to the ever generous Hinke! Thick, frothy, dense, 'Brugse kant'-like lacing, snow white, stable head on a hazed straw blonde beer with yellow glow. Aroma of fresh halfripe banana, white soap, white bread dough, thin slices of lemon flesh, oxidized green apple, unripe (white) pineapple, very dry Chardonnay, pumice, clove, hints of cinnamon (oddly), powder sugar, lime zest, raw pure cucumber, radish and wet clay. Fruity, quite crisp onset, lots of green banana and some green apple, unripe pear and unripe peach, sweetish with a sourish undercurrent, medium carbonated with some minerally effects; very slick, smooth body, indeed filled to the brim with wheat - more soapy than the average Belgian witbier, with all those typical white bread and sourdough characteristics one can associate with this type of grain, while the soothing breadiness of barley is indeed completely lacking. Quite some 'green' fruitiness of raw cucumber and unripe pear, as well as green apple, linger about, while spicy phenols appear, first in the form of the common clove, but then turning more cinnamon- and coriander powder-like; ends dryish and yeasty, with that sourish-soapy wheat remaining completely dominant, also when an injection of soft floral hop bitterishness is added. Quite 'filling' for a beer of this strength, too much so to be entirely refreshing; yellow-green fruitiness hovers over an indeed wholly wheaty malt profile, and given the lack of any 'distracting' flavours, I cannot but conclude that I miss the barley here. I take note of the fact that Jopen, like several other breweries even in the Low Countries, wants to scan the entire beer world and this has resulted more often than not in truly enjoyable beers, but this one, though interesting from a technical viewpoint, cannot completely convince me. I think I will turn to that Ayinger Bräu-Weisse I have sitting in my collection instead, next time I want a taste of that lovely Bavarian wheat ale tradition.

33cl Blik van Tappie Toe Slijterij. Citroenschil, verbena, hint van sinaspril, fris, licht, doet me in de verte denken aan Blanche de Namur, romig, degelijk bitter. Lichte body. Hier hou ik wel van.

Draft at the Wildeman, Amsterdam. Poured a hazy yellow straw colour with a lasting frothy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, floral hops. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a fresh, crisp, light citrus, herbal, floral, lavender, dry hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Optisch sehr sehr hell, in der Nase Grapefruit, ebenso im Trunk, dann Zitrus. Glaub die Bedienung hier in der Brauerei hat mir glatt ein IPA gebracht. Geschmackvoll, aber galt kein Weizen.
