Cask at the source. Opaque maroon brown color, fine tan head with good retention and solid lacing. Earthy coffee grounds aroma with a hint of cocoa. Taste is equally earthy and roasty. Delicious.

Called XXX Brodies Prime at the NWAF ’13, it’s a strong black ale which heats the palate through its strength but retains its fruit flavours.

Cask at CPK, London. Pours clear, black-brown with a fine, creamy head. Rich aroma with cocoa, coffee, whisky, wood. Medium to big sweet flavor with some bitter, booze-soaked wood, dark chocolate, some pinot noir, charred earth, lightly tangy dark fruits. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Mildly warming to finish but impressively mild (i.e. low-impact) at the same time, with some dark wood, dark chocolate, light coffee. There’s a great wood character permeating this beer. Great stuff. I wish I saw Hawkshead more often.
