Gents Bier Festival 2023 - Pale golden colour with thin head. Base grainy sweetness. Lots of spiciness from the yeast. Very dry finish. Good Saison.

The second beer brewed by Verzet specifically and exclusively for their crowd funders, called ‘Brigadiers’; the first one was a black IPA, this one is presented as a saison. Snow white, medium sized, membrane-lacing, gradually breaking head, lightly hazed warm yellow-golden robe. Aroma of green melon, grass, lime zest, overripe cucumber, green kiwi, dough, kefir, pear. Fruity onset, kiwi, Granny Smith and unripe melon, softish carb for the style, smooth body; soft sourish edge round a white-bready, smooth maltiness, carrying this ‘green fruitiness’ to a grassy and herbal hoppiness, which fails to deliver the right bitterness and spiciness to counter this sweet and almost ‘juicy’ fruitiness – and therefore fails to credibly establish this beer as a saison for me. Refreshing, well-made, elegant beer, do not get me wrong, but not a real saison, though I admit that the term ‘saison’ is open to broad interpretation to say the least, even much more so today than it ever was.

A little cloudy blond to gold beer, creamy slightly irregular white head, pretty stable, a bit adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: malty, floral, a little oxidized, a bit fruity, some banana, yeasty, sweet impression. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bitter start, a bit herbal, yeast, some banana peel, metallic touch, dry, a little soapy, spicy touch. Aftertaste: good dry bitterness, herbal notes, hay, grains, spicy, hoppy, grassy finish. Decent saison!
