The first and only one. In 1901, Maxim Ale was first introduced to the North East. Following an increase in strength in 1938, it became known as Double Maxim. This premium quality ale is still famous among discerning drinkers for its well-rounded flavour.

Bottle at home in London with Lyoli. Pours clear, ruby-brown with a fine, off-white cream head. Nose holds toasty bread, semi-ripe fruits, cherries. Light to medium sweet flavor with toasty grains, pleasant fruits, some brown sugar, bread, very light bitterness. Light bodied with average carbonation. Crisp, light sweet finish, with toasty and lightly grainy bread, more lightly ripened fruits, some raisins, dates, brown sugar. A tasty little ditty.

Bottle, at ØlFestival 2012. It’s an almost clear one, brown in color and with a minimal sized head. Buttery caramel, some lightly chessy hops, bread and nuts on the aroma. There’s some bitterness in the flavor, else it’s pretty much the same as the aroma, the usual suspects buttery caramel, bread and nuts, and also some cheesy, light grassy hops. Medium to thin on the palate, quite dry. Bitter end with caramel. Well, it’s certainly nothing super impressive going on here, but it’s an honest English brown ale. 120512

500ml bottle - pours a nicer deeper brown than it looks in the bottle, the white head stays longer than expected. The nose is a bit tinny, some roasted caramel in there, a bit pungent. The mouthfeel is quite good, an oily slick palate, with a nutty aftertaste. There is quite a bit going on in there - fruity, malty, bit of a kick at the end. Quite a good drink in all honesty.

Bottle from Morrisons, Sidcup. Brown pour with a light beige head. Raisin, herb and grapefruit aroma. Quite bitter-sweet. Flavours of raisins and a little caramel. Bitter-sweet finish. Not too bad.

Pours clear brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, bread and floral hops. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a malty, floral finish. Body is light to medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.

Clear 500ml bottle, best before 28 Jan 2009, drank on a cold, damp UK evening in Nov 2008. Poured into a pint sleeve glass. Drank this beer years ago at the Vaux Brewery Tap before watching Grimsby Town play at the Stadium of Light. The brewery closed a few years later and the beer is now brewed in Stockport, miles from Sunderland, its original home, not that the label tells you that! Teak red/brown in colour, bright and clear, the off-white started thinly and got thinner as i drank down the pint. Fairly sweet aroma, some toffee and caramel mix to give it an intersting smell. The aroma flavours follow into the taste and a toffee feel is there for all to find. Very ’more-ish’ a beer that is extremely drinkable. The 4.7% is well balanced and the overall experience was a good one. A good bottled Brown Ale.
