Pours black, no real head. Scent is full, mild nutty, almost coconut like. Sweet, candy like. TAste is full, sweet, coconut-like. Lovely. Quite crunchy. Medium sweet.

One of three dozen beers launched at this year’s BCBF honouring Billie, the deceased dog and mascot of Billie’s craft beer pub in Antwerp – a pub I have frequented regularly in its early days, so I was well acquainted with the dog of the house and I am sure his owner, the ever-friendly Stéfan, will appreciate the many liquid tributes made to him at ‘his’ festival. Open, beige, moussy ring, pitch black robe. Intense nose of pecan nut pie, pistachio cream, macadamia nuts, hot chocolate sauce, toffee, bourbon, marzipan, caramel, cinnamon, vanilla, hazelnut oil. Densely sweet onset, candied dates, raisins, medium to rather high carb, very full and thick, oily mouthfeel; toffeeish, deeply chocolatey and inherently nutty malt layers – the nuttiness further amplified by the use of actual nuts of different kinds, with pecan and pistachio being quite recognizable. Tonka bean-like marzipan and cinnamon effects further colour a dense, long, creamy, warming finish with evidently very bourbon-like alcohol and a dash of peppery hops. Intensely bittersweet but much more sweet than bitter; in any case an impressive construction, not just for complexity but for sheer solidity as well. One I would love to revisit quietly at home.
