Dark lager by BBP, loosely intended as a Dunkel, but bizarrely fermented with a kveik yeast which is about the opposite of bottom fermenting – so I guess the ‘lager’ part here has more to do with lagering than with lager yeast (and should therefore not be taken literally); thanks to Craftmember for sharing at BBP’s original taproom in Brussels. Pale greyish off-white, medium thick, shred-lacing head, misty chestnut brown robe with amber-ruddy glow. Aroma of wet toast, roasted walnuts, hard caramel (without the sweetness), dry old tea bags, black radish peel, mace, very faint hint of Oxo sauce. Malty start, caramelly (again without the sweetness) and toasty-bitterish with a very thin toffee-like edge to it giving a bittersweet effect; leafy hoppiness, a bit tea-ish with side notes of bitter tree leaves, mace and nutmeg, tilts the balance towards bitterness in the end, with a long-lasting effect. Much more bitter (due to hops but also toasted malts) than your average Munich-style Dunkel – and again, a beer fermented with kveik, even if it has been lagered at near freezing temperatures for weeks after, can never truly be a lager for me.

Tap at the brewery. Thin body, medium carbonation. Medium bitterness, moderate minerally water feeling. Medium bitterness, low background sweetness. Kinda plain coffeeish dry roast malty flavour. Okay, not great.

Taste: a bit sweet up front, malty, grains, soft roast, pretty bitter, hoppy, dry, some caramel. Aftertaste: gentle roast, caramel, bitter and hoppy, malty, grains, some dried fruits, raisins, figs, more bitter hops int he finish, decent beer!

Draft sample @ BBP Bailli also as 'dark lager at BBP Bailli', but not same version that was released a good while ago. Here use of lutra / Kveik yeast strain.

44cl can from the brewery shop. F: big, tanned, long lasting. C: dark brown, clear with red hue against the light. A: dark malts, bready, citrus touch, roasted tones, bit coffee. T: medium malty base, bready, roasted tones, coffee, orange touch, nice balanced long lasting bitterness, medium carbonation, bit like IPA feeling, good one, enjoyed.
