Hint of raisin in the nose. Nice reddish brown color. Trappist yeast dominates the flavor. Slightly bitter finish. A refreshing beer on a warm day at the abbey.

Dunkler, herb-bitterer Antrunk, eher wenig aromatisch. Das Malz ist geringfügig röstig, ebenso die Hefigkeit. Wässrig-bitterer Abgang mit wenig Malzeinfluss. 10/7/9/7//7

9/07/2011 33cl from tap @ abbey De Kluis (2011-317)

Served way too cold. A bit cloudy purple brown beer, creamy light beige head, adhesive, fairly stable. Aroma: very fruity, caramel, malts. MF: light carbon, light to medium body. TAste: bitter start, some malts, citrus, bit grassy even. Aftertaste: citrus, little bitter, some milk chocolate and red berries on warming up.

On tap at the brewery cafe, as 5 Bruin. It poured a hazy, dark amber body under a small, off-white to beige head leaving lacings. The aroma was initially buttery and toffee-ish, but after finishing the blond first, it smoothened and presented roasted malts and dried fruits. Also some hops. The flavor was sweet, slightly buttery, and with caramel, dried fruits and hints of roasted malts. Full-bodied, and with caramel sweetness and some bitterness in the finish. A quite nice beer that is too buttery, even though it smoothens after a while. As I drank the beer though, I sort of grew fond of the level of butteryness, and it drank well with the cake I had to it. Still prefer the blond though. 091008

On tap at De Achelse Kluis as Achel Bruin 5. Hazy dark brown with a thick off white head. Aroma of sulfur, rotten eggs, dung. WTF?! Flavour is light sulfur, some yeast and all bitterness. No malt backbone or any sugar left whatsoever. Dry mouthfeel, light bodied. This must have been in very bad shape, because this was Trappist unworthy. Bummer.
